BTS’ discography is vast. Even before their debut, they’ve posted self-produced songs, either original songs or adaptations from existing songs. It’s understandable that new ARMYs might miss some songs, especially the old ones, so we’re back with part three of Hidden Gems to help you discover, or re-discover, some good songs that are rarely mentioned. You can also check part 1 and part 2 of this blog if you want to find more.
Now, without further ado, let’s jump into it!
To celebrate their first anniversary, BTS posted “So 4 More” both on YouTube and SoundCloud. It’s an adaptation of the song “Like Water” by Pro Era, released in 2013.
“It’s been already a year, but I can’t get used to it no matter how many times I try…My future is like an ink-wash painting (blurry).”
It had only been a year since their debut when this song was released, but they were already reflecting on themselves. The frustration of knowing there were many things beyond their debut is apparent, but instead of thinking of it as their end goal, they were determined to see it as a new starting point.
“No matter how stormy it gets, Bangtan comforts me. My steps will take me to success.”
But there’s a comfort in being together. At the end of the song, there is a realization that they’re in this together that pushes them forward.
You might have heard the infamous “A Typical Trainee’s Christmas” from BTS. A year later, BTS released the continuation of this song. If the previous one is from a trainee's point of view, now they tell a story of an idol on a Christmas day.
“When are you debuting? Asked by friends and relatives. But now calls have been changed to words of congratulations.”
This song is a tad bit brighter than the previous “trainee” version, though there’s still some sadness lingering in a joyful coming-together melody.
“This year it’s just practice Christmas gift. But we’re only thankful, with you by our side.”
Though celebrating Christmas as an idol isn’t that much different than as a trainee, it feels less lonely because they have their ARMY to celebrate Christmas together with them now.
This song is an adaptation of a song with the same title by Urban Zakapa, though a rap part was added to BTS’ version.
“Our first meeting that I engraved onto my heart was sweet like a Caramel Macchiato.”
This is track number 6 from their O!RUL8,2? When you listen to the song, the Lofi melody will carry you away and make you want to sip a cup of hot coffee while enjoying a relaxing moment. It will make you forget the fact that this song is actually about a breakup, which is described in various flavors of coffee.
“I made it a habit to drink Americanos because of you. I wondered what kind of taste it was when we were dating, but it's coldness and bitter aftertaste makes a bit of sense now that you’re not here, girl.”
Have you ever listened to a song that equates to the story of someone who was dumped with the planet Pluto, which was expelled from the main planetary arrangement of the solar system? Downgraded from always included to being forgettable?
“I, too, used to be your star. You must feel nice to be the light. All I do is to receive you.”
The song title itself also raised a question. Why name it “134340” instead of just “Pluto”? Perhaps, the most plausible reason is to show rejection. In 2005, after the discovery of Eris – a dwarf planet that turns out a tad bigger than Pluto – this last major planet of the solar system was demolished into just a mere number “134340”; it has lost its name.
“Could it be really that you’ve found Eris? Tell me, how am I, in any way, worse than that moon?”
“Would it be because you’ve found someone who fits your standards better than I was that you dumped me?” Even so, just like how Pluto, or Planet 134340, is still orbiting the sun, the person’s still circling their ex-lover without traction.
Are there any other BTS songs that you think are hidden diamonds that haven't been mentioned above? There are more than 200 songs in BTS' discography, so it's not uncommon for some songs to be overshadowed by new releases. We hope that this Hidden Gems series can help you remember those gems that were accidentally pushed into a corner of your memory.
