Kim Taehyung, a beloved member of BTS who goes by the stage name ‘V,’ has always stood out from the crowd with his distinctive personality, and his first solo album, “Layover” is no exception.
As V introduced his album’s title track “Slow Dancing” on the most recent episode of “Suchwita,” it became clear that this song reflects his individuality. The track carries a 70s soul sound, making it a perfect accompaniment to a glass of wine. What truly sets it apart, though, is V’s signature unique voice. With its warmth and smoothness, his voice has a comforting quality that can instantly draw listeners in and make them feel a strong emotional connection to the music. Often described as velvety, smooth, and sensuous, these characteristics make his voice particularly well-suited for conveying romantic and introspective themes. His voice can evoke a sense of intimacy and tenderness which has endeared him to countless fans.
When you listen to “Slow Dancing,” you can’t help but envision a slow dance, just as the title suggests. V’s ability to infuse his personality into his music shines through in all of the tracks but especially so with “Slow Dancing.” In fact, V’s revelation of “Slow Dancing” began with a playful teaser on social media. He posted a cryptic message that read, ‘Dancing (Slow),’ sparking curiosity among fans. Then during his interview with SUGA, he revealed that this was indeed a spoiler for the album. V explained that he was working out, and inspired by Namjoon’s cool workout sets, he wrote down ‘Dancing.’ However, he couldn't resist adding a cute spoiler by including ‘Slow’ in parentheses. This playful and spontaneous act perfectly encapsulates V’s mischievous yet endearing personality.
Another distinct feature of “Slow Dancing” can be seen in the form of the freestyle dancing seen in both the MV and his stage performances. Freestyle dancing allows individuals to express themselves freely without adhering to a specific choreography or set of moves. This creative freedom enables dancers to convey their emotions, thoughts, and personal style through movement. It’s a form of self-expression that is unique to each dancer, making every performance distinct.
During V’s recent guest appearance on “You Quiz on the Block,” V explained that for every performance of “Slow Dancing,” the choreography will be different. One of the key elements that makes freestyle dance stand out is its improvisational nature. Dancers respond to the music spontaneously, making split-second decisions about their movements. This unpredictability keeps the audience engaged and creates an element of surprise. Yet if you watch the MV or the stage performances, there is still a cohesiveness and synchronization to their dance moves that results in a visually appealing performance.
Reflecting on his earlier days as a trainee, V shared how his deep love for music was shaped by Namjoon, SUGA, and j-hope. They played a crucial role in guiding, not just him, but all of the vocal line members, as they embarked on their musical explorations. Gathering the group together, Namjoon and the others passionately urged them to listen to more music. Their commitment was so profound that V takes immense pride in his enduring love for music. He boldly claims to listen to more music than anyone else in the world. Every day he discovers new music, to the extent that he now has quite an extensive repertoire of musical genres that he both listens to and enjoys.
As V's solo career continues to flourish, and his colors continue to shine brightly, we can only anticipate that whatever he does musically will undoubtedly reflect his unique personality. His artistry serves as an inspiration to us all, a reminder that the joy of music is infinite and that the pursuit of one’s passion can lead to remarkable creative heights. With V, there’s always something new to discover, and his fans, the ARMY, eagerly support all of his artistic endeavors.
