REVOLUTIONIZING THE 7

Seven has become a ‘thing’ for the ARMY fandom, hasn’t it? And I use that word ‘thing’ in the most endearing way possible. Just as purple has made its way into the #BTSARMY psyche, seven has also been the new #1 for quite a while now. Not only has number seven revolutionized the relationship between BTS and their fans, but it has also transcended its numerical value to become an emblem of hope and personal empowerment.

Map of the Soul: 7 was a defining moment in the history of BTS. Big Hit described it as “a heartfelt story of BTS and their search for their “real selves.” Their lives had changed significantly since their debut seven years prior, and with the release of this new album, they began to extend themselves beyond the borders of their chosen art form – music. In addition to their musical endeavors, BTS ventured into the world of visual art through initiatives like “CONNECT, BTS” and the “Black Swan” art film featuring Slovenia artists from MN Dance Company.

Amongst the 19 tracks on this album, one, in particular, referenced the special nature of BTS and ARMY’s relationship. “We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal” was (and still is today) a testament to BTS’ growth, resilience, and unyielding support from the ARMY fandom. Through its emotive lyrics, powerful vocal performances, and impactful production, the song delivered a message of strength and unity. It’s been three years since its release, yet it still stands as a timeless anthem that continues to inspire and uplift its listeners.

By lyrically stating, “we were only seven, but we have you all now… we are not seven, with you,” BTS acknowledges that the love and support received from ARMY enabled the group to expand its impact and reach far beyond what they could have achieved individually. As a group of seven members, BTS is, was, and will always be — one!

This point has become especially meaningful now that the seven members have embarked on their respective solo careers in conjunction with fulfilling their military service obligations. All of the members at one point or another have asked their fans to wait for them, to look forward to their return, and to keep supporting them. They openly share how they miss their members and how they look forward to the group members reuniting again in 2025, with hope and anticipation.

This is particularly so for the maknae, the youngest member of the group, Jung Kook, who just recently announced the release of his new solo single, “Seven.” In that one word alone are layers upon layers of meaning, memories, and emotions. While we don’t yet know the lyrics of his new song, Jung Kook’s songs always reflect his sincerity and love for his fans and his six hyung (older BTS brothers).

Fans would have felt this tenfold when BTS released a surprise track for FESTA 2023 titled, “Take Two.” Through their lyrics (courtesy of Doolset) the members were once again able to express those things that they earnestly wanted their fans to know:

“Because it was with you, it was possible,

Because I was with you, I was happy,

Because of your voice, I was able to breathe,

Because of your tears, I was able to get back up.”

So how has the number seven been revolutionized, you might ask? The significance of the number seven lies not only in its representation of the seven members of BTS but also in its embodiment of the unwavering love and support shared between the group and their dedicated fanbase, ARMY. Perhaps this is the reason that for millions of fans across the world now, the number seven signifies unity and togetherness; hope and personal empowerment; strength and resilience.
