Happiness is an important ingredient of life. By experiencing joy – doing things that make you laugh or feeling a sense of positivity – you can achieve true happiness. It can be a reflection of one’s life, well-being, and accomplishments. Even just listening to the rain can bring someone happiness. For BTS, happiness comes in many shapes, colors, and forms. It can be defined as performing on stage, being recognized globally, achieving their dreams and aspirations, or even ARMY. For years, we have seen the seven of them mature together. We have also experienced alongside BTS what it feels like to be at their highest moments in life. We have seen what makes them happy as a group – but what does happiness look like for them as individuals?
As always, let’s begin with RM. From RM’s NPR Tiny Desk concert where he performed two tracks from his first solo album “Indigo,” we got to see how art inspires him and brings him joy. We also got to see on “All day with RM Part.1 & Part.2’ what brings him happiness. From the art all over his house to his whiskey collection and his passion for books, RM could showcase his true self and the things that make him happy. RM also did an interview with Zach Sang where he unpacked some of his tracks and expressed how happy he was to feature so many of his teenage heroes/role models in his first solo album.
Next we have Jin. As we know, 2023 looks a bit different for Jin. He enlisted early December last year, so I know ARMY will be hoping that he remains safe and healthy until he returns. Prior to his enlistment date, he did a lot of things that made him happy like gaming and fishing. He also tried new things like going on variety shows where he could laugh all day on set. Compared to doing concerts, this gave Jin a different feeling of happiness. Jin worked really hard and always expressed that he found happiness in his work. He enjoyed being with his members, and this made his job that much more enjoyable and exciting. He also thanked ARMY and their passion for BTS because he was able to experience such happiness before carrying out his duties in the Korean Army.
Back in 2020, SUGA shared the ten things in his life that made him happy and how ‘devastatingly lonely’ he’d be without them. A lot of which still fit his personality today. For instance, his number one thing was sleep. Sleeping long on rest days, sleeping on days with no schedules or when the air was fine, and sleeping in whenever he could get a late start. Another important thing SUGA mentioned was having a whiskey. Who would believe that three years later he would be starting his own variety show where he’d just talk with guests whilst drinking alcohol. Now I don’t know about you, but I know that this show will be a laugh and half for both him and ARMY. SUGA is a shy, charismatic kind of guy, so seeing him do something like this brings all of us happiness.
J-hope of BTS is the epitome of happiness. He is a social butterfly with an energetic soul. In an article written by Spinditty (2022), they once mentioned that “Happiness for Hobi is his freedom and that he likes being his true self. His three main requirements for happiness are family, good health, and love.” Last year, (after four years since his mixtape) j-hope released his first solo album Jack in the Box. He was stoked with the results of his album and the hard work he put into it. He was also happy to have collaborated with KAWS who he truly liked and respected. Since Jack in the Box we have seen j-hope accomplish so much, from being the first Korean artist to headline Lollapalooza, winning the award for most popular male artist at the 2022 MAMA awards and also performing on New Year’s Eve at Times Square. Seeing j-hope do so well as a solo artist since the release of his album must bring him so much happiness.
Next up is Jimin. Jimin’s happiness is drawn from affection and being loved. He finds enjoyment in his work because he is able to build strong relationships with his friends, family, the other members of BTS, and of course ARMY who he enjoys talking to. In his 2022 interview, Jimin mentioned that in the future he wants to try new things and show a more raw, mature, personal side of himself. He has seen some of his hyung members work with darker materials, and he too wants to experiment down this path with his music. Jimin feels that by exploring new genres he will be able to showcase who he is – not only in his performances but in his songs as well.
Now we have V. He may look like a high maintenance idol, but what makes him happy is much simpler than that. V enjoys spending time with his friends, family, and his dog Yeontan. Having the company of those whom he loves the most is all that he needs to be happy. He has also shown an appreciation for jazz music, and this style of music has recently been portrayed in his latest photos on Twitter, which looks good on him (if I do say so myself).
The youngest member, Jung Kook, has achieved some massive goals since BTS announced their solo works. He dropped three solo releases, “Stay Alive” (Prod. SUGA of BTS) for a webtoon, he featured in “Left & Right” with Charlie Puth, and he was also the first Korean artist to sing the official FIFA anthem “Dreamers.” Performing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, we got to see Jung Kook smile as he took a photo with the Korean National Football team and his favorite player Son Heung-Min. Singing with other members of BTS and ARMY, no matter what the songs were, always brought Jung Kook happiness. He once expressed how ‘incredibly happy’ he would be when he heard the roars from the audience every time he performed, so I can’t imagine how happy he was when he got this opportunity as a solo artist.
It is great to see BTS members flourish as individual artists and to see/hear the future plans they have in store for themselves. Although at this time in life, they might be (temporarily) walking their own paths, it is nice to see them happy, healthy, and doing what they want to do for themselves as individuals. I know ARMY would also want the same for BTS to be safe, happy, healthy, and successful in whatever they pursue.
We are aware of what brings BTS members happiness, but what makes ARMY happy? I know for a fact that it definitely is the well-being of BTS (knowing that they are safe/healthy) but I feel there are simple things out there that can bring us happiness too. Like spending time with friends and family, being able to afford BTS merch, binge watching k-dramas, learning korean or something extravagant like taking a trip to Korea. Who knows, hopefully just like BTS, ARMY too are safe, happy, healthy and successful with whatever they do this year.
