Jung Hoseok: A Name That Will Spread Throughout the Entire Country

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

BTS might have stopped their group activities since June 2022—with the exception of their Busan concert in October—but it doesn’t mean Jung Hoseok has slowed down his pace. As a rapper, producer, songwriter, and dancer of the group, he had the honor to release an official solo project after the big announcement, marking the beginning of his solo journey with the release of Jack In The Box, following right after his solo stage debut in Lollapalooza Chicago.

J-hope, or Hoseok, has had his eyes set on dancing since a young age. Through some members from his old dance crew “NEURON”, in which he performed under the name “Smile Hoya,” Hoseok has won several competitions, including first place in a national competition in 2008. He also bagged another win in one of the big K-pop companies’ dance competitions with his dance crew. It put him on the industry’s radar as a dancer to watch in South Korea.

As one of the rappers of BTS, Hoseok has a distinct style that made him stand out. He humbly admitted that he only started learning rap once he joined BTS by watching his teammates, Yoongi and Namjoon, rap. It also helps that BTS used to be a hip-hop group, with most of the previous trainees specializing in rap. But that fact only makes him more admirable by showcasing how his diligent hard work has helped him evolve and find his rap style. Though he might already have had a talent in rap that he just didn't realize before.

He is also an excellent singer. During the rare occasion when he does show his singing ability, it’s mind-blowing. One of his famous singing parts is on “Otsukare,” a Japanese song he made with Yoongi for their concert in Japan. It was kind of disappointing that we don’t have the audio version of this. He has a bold vocal and a strong support, and in this field, he shares the same habit with the second-oldest vocalist of BTS. Jimin is known for the “cry” voice at the end of every sentence, and Hoseok seems to do that quite a lot when he sings. The difference is, while Jimin’s “cry” is high and tinkling like a bell, Hoseok's is deeper and more raw.

He also has 135 KOMCA (Korean Music Copyright Association) credits under his stage name, j-hope. He was the first member to ever receive a credit through the song “Animal” with Jo Kwon in 2012. Jack In The Box, which was released in 2022 was his second solo album, with the first one being his Hope World mixtape in 2018. He’s responsible as one of the songwriters and producers in the group, releasing legendary bops like “Intro: Boy Meets Evil,” “Outro: Wings,” “MIC Drop,” “Airplane pt.2,” “Dionysus,” “Outro: Ego,” “Fly To My Room,” and “Dis-ease.”

His versatility isn’t limited to his dance, rap, and singing skills. Hoseok is one of BTS’ fashionista. He likes to mix and match several patterns and likes to throw together different splashes of colors. He’s known for his ability to make some questioning outfits look good when he wears them, especially the legendary outfit by Jin on “Run BTS!” Episode 29. Recently, he was invited to Paris Fashion Week 2023, attending three shows from Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Hermès, furthermore stating his legitimacy as a true fashion icon.

During a recent interview with MMTG, j-hope mentioned the new big project he’s been preparing for 2023. It was said to be a dance-based project, and as his old dance crew “NEURON” has opened their own Instagram page, it’s not a stretch to anticipate a collaboration between the two. Whatever j-hope is going to bring to the table, there’s no doubt that it will be something spectacular, a whole feast one might say.

In a much earlier interview with Haru Hana in 2014, j-hope said the meaning of his name is "A name that will spread throughout the entire country." Looking at all the achievements he has to this day, it seems like the meaning of his name has come true. But his name hasn’t just spread throughout the entire country, his name has spread throughout the entire world.
