Hope on the Street

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

Dance is a form of art. It is an expression that can be channeled to demonstrate an idea, an emotion, or to release energy. Being a great dancer can come naturally for some. It may take a lot of time, commitment, and dedication to learn different genres of dance, but the outcome for both the performer and the audience is a captivating experience. When it comes to dance, you could say that there are two types. One can be identified as an impulsive response to the sound of music – aka freestyle – and the other a skillfully choreographed piece where the choreographer takes into consideration the rhythm, lyrics, and emotion of the artist who composed the song.

"Hope on the Street" is a prime example of what feeling the music looks like. Thanks to Hobi and his passion for dance, we get to see raw footage of him and other special guests breaking a sweat and enjoying their time in the dance room. What Hobi and BTS referred to as a ‘JAM’ session when they were trainees (a time when all seven members of BTS were in the practice room and they would freestyle one by one) we now get to see as HotS ("Hope on the Street"), a show all created by Hobi himself. Throughout the series, we get a feel of what type of music Hobi likes to dance to. We get to see how much effort and practice he puts into becoming a better dancer and how much joy dancing brings him.

When it comes to Hobi, we all know how gifted and talented he is as a dancer. His musicality and how he hears the beat is beyond what some of us could imagine. Through "Hope on the Street" we will occasionally see Hobi show how he takes care of himself even before freestyling to his favorite jams. By stretching and warming up his body properly, he is able to loosen up, relax his muscles, and show the world what he can do. Hobi once mentioned in one of his live videos (BTS Live Hope on the Street) how important it is for him to stretch before dancing. He stated “If I don’t stretch before dancing and dance for a long time, my muscles cramp up… and I have muscular pain the next day.” Just hearing Hobi say this shows the seriousness of dancing and what it really means to him. One thing that always comes to mind when watching Hobi is his energy and how contagious it is. Even before HotS, Hobi had his way of making fans/viewers smile and laugh. He is a charismatic guy, and this shows whenever he is in front of the camera. In his HotS series, one moment he’s all serious giving dancing tips and life lessons on how you should take care of yourself before any big event, and the next he’s his goofy self, screaming happily, smiling ear to ear, and dancing crazy to a ‘hot’ song. You can’t expect any less from Hobi. In fact, you are guaranteed to experience chaos and all sorts of emotions when watching his live videos, and that’s a plus.

Although "Hope on the Street" was a casual show that kicked off eight years ago, you could only imagine what plans Hobi has in store if he were to ever make a comeback with HotS this year, 2023. When he first began, he had guests like BTS Jimin, V, and Jung Kook who starred on the show. Having his maknae line there, supporting his passion for dance, showed true friendship. ARMY got to see more and more of Hobi in his element, and we also got to see a bit of freestyling from our favorite maknae line. Other guests like Jaesang and Kazane Kasai (a Japanese choreographer) also appeared on the show. Kazane Kasai was very grateful after appearing on the show and even went to Twitter to thank Hobi for learning her style of dance and giving her such a great opportunity.

Hobi also did a show Hope on the Street x Hwagae Market where BTS Suga and RM appeared for the first time along with V, who was there to do his punishment (Hobi stated). While other members of BTS mucked around with the music, Hobi, Suga, RM, and V did their best to keep fans/viewers entertained. So many guests have appeared on this show, and yet we still await the oldest of the lot (WWH, BTS Jin) to show up. Hopefully when everyone finishes their service and "Hope on the Street" is the new exciting plan Hobi is longing to announce, we just might get to see Jin appear on HotS in the future.

What once was a casual jam session with good friends could today be a great show starring who knows what dancers/guests Hobi could pull in. Hobi was racking in over hundreds of thousands of views in his early years of doing "Hope on the Street," and we just think that if we got a HotS series this year (2023) he would break the internet in seconds. Hobi even created merch for HotS when the show was first up and running. The way he is going now, going back to his roots of dancing and giving us a second series of HotS would only add to his current success as an artist and a dancer.

Before debuting as a member of BTS, Hobi was part of an underground dance team called Neuron. Earlier this year (February) Neuron started up their first Instagram account and fans believe that this might be adding fuel to the hints already out there that Hobi is bringing "Hope on the Street" back. With small remarks that Hobi has made in previous interviews (falling into his love for dance again) and the little snippets of him dancing on his Instagram story, we just can’t help but think the same. We know though, whatever Hobi has planned for us, it's going to be great and we can’t wait.
