FINDING OUR DREAMS ONCE AGAIN

The inspiration for this week’s blog comes from SUGA’s closing remarks from Disney Plus Korea’s recent video titled, “SUGA: Road to D-Day.” Through a selection of his solo songs, SUGA takes viewers on a tour sharing insights and intimate details associated with how he was experiencing life during times when he wrote lyrics or created beats. As he wraps up his virtual tour, SUGA shares that we can find him and his story of "finding his dream once again" in his upcoming documentary. Even though he felt that he had achieved everything he set out to do, it’s refreshing and reassuring to hear these words from him. It also reaffirms that for the seven members of BTS, embarking on their solo pursuits was requisite to their continued growth, development, and fulfillment as artists.

How many of us have experienced periods in our lives where we lost our focus, our drive, and our way? Perhaps even to the extent that we felt disconnected from everything and everyone around us — where even our reason for getting up every morning no longer felt important. Life may have lost its spark for us – every day feeling incomplete – “as if you don’t know how to live through, you don’t know how to fly away, you don’t know how to decide. Now, you don’t even know how to dream.” Losing sight of the dreams we once dreamed of or the possibilities we once thought possible can have a debilitating effect on our body, mind, and spirit. Soon the things that once gave us joy become burdensome, and the only way to continue is to walk away.

Recently, we got a sense of this during RM’s “Indigo’ Album Magazine Film — not from RM himself, but rather from DOCSKIM, the producer of “Wild Flower.” RM shared that DOCSKIM had originally planned to quit producing after this song was completed, but during the production process, he changed his mind. Then DOCSKIM confirmed that because of RM and the song “Wild Flower,” he once again found his passion for making music. In his own words, "[RM] really gave me hope. He gave me something to hone in and focus on. Production-wise, I really leveled up a lot."

BTS are known for their poetic lyricism, largely in part to RM’s influence and numerous contributions, as well as a team of dynamic lyricists and songwriters at hand. The keyword ‘dream’ features in many of their songs and throughout their ten-year career thus far, the BTS members have been very open about the realities of having or not having dreams, not being afraid to pursue your dreams or the fear of “when your own dreams devour you.” In a society that emphasizes the importance of education and career, and an industry full of opinions and criticisms, BTS continually dares to dream beyond what is expected of them. It’s not surprising then that they in turn have oftentimes questioned their own dreams and goals, both personally and professionally.

During the most recent episode (7) of “Suchwita,” Jimin shared that when he first became a Big Hit trainee he wasn’t ambitious about becoming part of BTS. It wasn’t until SUGA said to him one night “You’re a good singer so I really want you to be on our team,” that Jimin appreciated the weight of those words and the spark within him was ignited. Ten years later, fans know exactly how much Jimin has worked over the years, trying to perfect his craft. Through dedication, hard work, and extensive hours of practice Jimin has honed his vocals and dance finesse, while at the same time extending himself beyond his comfort zone. In the past, each of the members carried a shared dream and vision for the group BTS. Now, they are digging deep to realize dreams that perhaps sat dormant for many years, until now.

While it’s not a requirement of life that everyone must have a dream, it does give life a more focused sense of purpose. As we have seen with each of the solo projects released so far, pursuing their dreams has enabled each of the members to step outside of their comfort zones and take risks. The resulting personal growth and development has taken them all to new heights in their careers (such as j-hope’s Lollapalooza experience) and helped them fulfill life-long dreams, such as RM performing at Rolling Hall, or Jin, j-hope, and Jimin collaborating with their idols, Coldplay, J-Cole, and Taeyang respectively.

Seeing each of the members be re-inspired after a decade of non-stop activity is inspiring for fans as well. It shows us that at any point in our lives, we can push the pause button, and choose new(er) paths for ourselves. Whether we’re resetting our lives, taking a gap year, or finding ourselves for the first time, taking time to reevaluate priorities and goals in life can help us to explore new ideas, clarify our goals, and gain inspiration and motivation to achieve them. This has to be one of the reasons why we love BTS so much — their renewed passion for themselves as artists, their art, and their fans is immeasurable, yet humbling at the same time. “Dream.”
