Since the hiatus of BTS in June 2022, Jeon Jung Kook (aka JK), the youngest member of the group, has been keeping himself occupied with a flurry of exciting activities. From captivating appearances in the famous brand Calvin Klein's latest campaign to delightful early-morning live streams alongside Seventeen's Kim Mingyu, Jung Kook has been making waves. Not to mention, his latest solo single 'Seven' has ignited a frenzy among fans worldwide.
In a widely shared video, JK describes his latest release, "Seven," as a "passionate serenade" that perfectly captures the essence of summer. While initially, one might assume that the title refers to him and his six older BTS members, JK revealed in a Spotify interview that this particular "seven" holds a different significance. For him, it symbolizes the concept of "Monday to Sunday." Now, this begs the question: what could have influenced this choice? After taking a closer look at the lyrics, we find that the chorus emphasizes a deep and unwavering love, expressing the desire to love someone wholeheartedly every hour, minute, and second, for all seven days of the week. If this doesn't embody the essence of love, it's hard to imagine what else does.
If you haven't had the chance to watch the official music video (MV) for "Seven," it's time to catch up! In the MV, we are treated to the presence of renowned actress Han So-hee as the female lead. During a live stream after the release of his single, Jung Kook expressed his deep appreciation for Han So-hee’s participation in the shoot. He acknowledged her invaluable support and guidance, especially when he felt uncertain. Jungkook credited her exceptional acting skills for contributing to the overall success of the video, and he genuinely expressed his gratitude for her involvement.
The music video also features Latto, who collaborated with Jung Kook on the song. When he heard the track “Seven” for the very first time, he had a few artists in mind, but a producer felt that Latto's tone and style suited the song best. He reached out to her and was delighted when she accepted the collaboration offer. Latto's contribution added a distinct flair to the song. She definitely brought a fresh and dynamic flavor to the familiar world of K-pop which marked a great progression in Jung Kook's musical journey. After working together, Jung Kook expressed his utmost satisfaction with how their voices blended harmoniously in the song. He extended his heartfelt gratitude to Latto for her feature in "Seven," recognizing the unique contribution to the collaboration.
This newest addition to JK’s repertoire of songs gave fans several treats as Rapper JK made a long-awaited reappearance. Fans were also able to experience Actor JK for the first time, and while his vocals are always a highlight of any song he performs, there were a few vocal runs in “Seven” that definitely took our breaths away. Now, I am aware that there are two versions to this single. A ‘clean version’ (which I have only listened to) and an ‘explicit version (which I am yet to experience firsthand). Surprisingly, there were mixed reactions to the explicitness of his explicit version with some fans reveling in his newfound freedom of expression, while others struggled to make it to the end.
Regardless, Chapter 2 of Jung Kook’s career constantly reminds fans just how fortunate we are to experience JK in this new way. Having been the maknae of BTS for the past ten years, he is now forging a new path for himself. Of course, fans know that he’ll do exceptionally well, but at the same time, he’ll be learning as he goes. As he said recently, there’ll be mistakes, and not everyone will agree with or like what he does, but his sincerity is at the heart of everything. That is what JK hopes will continue to shine through the most.
“Seven” is well and truly here, in all of its glory, and already fans have received several versions of the song - something to suit everyone’s stylistic choices.
So the question is, which version are you streaming this summer?
