Celebrities all around the world have always faced backlash for their actions and are hence, oftentimes unable to show their true selves and have to put on the facade of a superficial idol. Things aren’t always as sweet as they look on camera, and the truth behind the screens is saddening. Despite being one of the most successful artists today, BTS still has a lot of haters, but they know how to shut them up and move on. Their path was not always filled with flowers and the treatment they received during their early years is very heartbreaking to look at. Here, we present you with 7 reasons for BTS’ success.
1. Kindness and Humility
BTS, in spite of the brand deals and endorsements they are surrounded with, have always been kind and humble. The maknae, Jung Kook, once stepped in to help a staff member fix one of the lights during MAMA 2019, which was a truly humble act. Another time, on the variety show, “Flower Crew,” hosted by Jo Seho, he was late since he had bought hamburgers for the cast and offered it to them. But Jo Seho said that they looked like leftovers, and Jung Kook looked disappointed after that comment. Many fans were still angry after Seho’s apology. Fast forward many years later to March 2020 and Jo Seho and Yoo Jae Suk, hosts of “You Quiz On The Block” invited BTS over. This was really ironic, yet Jung Kook did not show any glimpse of anger or hate towards Seho and had rather laughed with him and hugged him with an open heart.
2. Perseverance
BTS have been really perseverent throughout the years. They also had bad times and were victims of mistreatment. Still, they sprang back up and their overwhelming success today justifies that. From having no waiting rooms to performing on a red carpet and from being denied the Rookie Of The Year award to being mocked for their music, hair, looks, or costumes, these people have endured whatever life has thrown in their way.
3. Being Different
When BTS debuted in 2013, their song color and tone was different from the songs being released in the K-pop industry back then. The genre was dominated by the Big 3 companies, JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, and YG Entertainment. BTS’ music was unique and not something the audience had heard before. Their discography exposed the inhumane standards set by society, which the young population related to. Eventually, their career shot off and they became really popular but other companies still refused to acknowledge their rise.
4. Not Paying Heed to the Negativity
BTS had times when people treated them like they were nothing. At the Busan Asia Festival in 2016, they were scheduled for the last stage and during this time, Namjoon had been injured. SBS cancelled their performance out of the blue, but ARMY’s refused to leave the stadium without seeing their stage. SBS then had no choice but to let them perform, and the boys still gave a flawless performance on a severely unorganised stage which was hazardous. Despite this treatment, BTS kept running forward with their skills and talent which no one could deny.
5. Not Giving Up Hope
After BTS’ popularity shot up around the years 2015-2017, many companies tried to buy them off BigHit Entertainment (now HYBE). Bang Si Hyuk, their producer, and the CEO of the company, received countless calls to give up hope for BTS and sell them off. But, he did not give up and supported them through it all, because he believed they would make it big one day. And, he was right. We can see how emotional he felt when they reached #1 on Billboard because he knew how much the boys and he had gone through to finally reach that far.
6. Working Hard
It is undeniable that BTS is successful because of their hard work. They weren’t from a privileged company and had to work their way up to the top. Their dormitories, their meals, and their lifestyle were really pitiful, and if anyone deserves being surrounded by fame, it’s them. During “I-LAND”, a survival show which debuted the group ENHYPEN, Taehyung jokingly said that during his trainee days, they didn’t have as much of a variety of food options as the trainees of “I-LAND” did. But, we know that they weren’t served silver spoons and are successful today solely because of their hard work and skills.
7. Speaking Up
BTS have never been afraid to speak up. They have always expressed their honest opinions in a very polite manner and have exposed the evils of the music industry. Despite being alienated in the western music industry, they haven’t backed away from telling the world the truth which shows us that they aren’t afraid of showing the world their true selves.
These 7 lessons from BTS are really priceless, and we should be inspired by their journey as well!
