V Loves Jazz

Just as music inspires fans, artists too are inspired by music. BTS, as artists, are no exception.

In this blog, we’re going to talk more about Kim Taehyung (aka V) who many fans would agree often seems like an old soul. With his deep, silky smooth vocal tones, his voice captures the hearts of many, and in the process, fans get to see another side of him. Yet, it is no secret that V loves Jazz music – we’ve seen this many times in live streams, videos, and even interviews that he’s shared over the past ten years. Before diving into Kim Taehyung’s passion for Jazz and the instruments he has been learning to play though, let’s take a look at the other members of BTS and what genres of music they enjoy most, starting with the hyung line.

RM, (aka Kim Namjoon), has a diverse taste in music and often shows his love for genres such as hip-hop, rap, and alternative rock. In previous interviews, he has mentioned some great artists like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Drake, and A$AP Rocky as some of his personal favorites, with Nas his biggest influence. Jin, on the other hand, has a soft spot for pop ballads and classic rock. He has expressed his enjoyment of listening to bands like Coldplay and Maroon 5, as well as appreciating ballad singers such as Yoon Do-Hyun and Kim Bum-soo. Suga's musical preferences lean towards hip-hop, rap, and R&B. He admires artists like Kanye West, Drake, and Epik High, who have all had a great impact on his music production to date. J-hope’s music taste spans across a wide range of genres, including hip-hop, pop, and EDM. He has shown admiration for artists J. Cole, Chris Brown, and Justin Bieber, as well as EDM and The Chainsmokers. J-hope’s appreciation for different musical styles is evident in his image, his dance, and his music.

The maknae line of BTS also have their own style of music that they gravitate to. Beginning with Jimin, his preference revolves around R&B, soul, and pop music. Artists like Tori Kelly, Kehlani, and Justin Timberlake have influenced a lot of Jimin’s music and performances. Kim Taehyung also has a diverse taste in music, drawing inspiration from various genres such as R&B, soul, jazz, and indie. He has mentioned musicians like John Legend, Eric Benét, and IU who he enjoys listening to as some of his favorites. Lastly, Jung Kook, the youngest member of the group, also shows an interest in a wide range of music genres such as pop, rock, hip-hop, and R&B. Jung Kook has mentioned artists like IU, Justin Bieber, Charlie Puth, and G-Dragon as some of his favorites. These artists highlight his eclectic tastes and style in music. Isn't it incredibly captivating to witness how the artists that BTS members admire and find joy in listening to, truly reflect their unique individualities as musicians?

Let's refocus our attention on Kim Taehyung and explore his captivating musical journey. V has always displayed a deep fascination with Jazz, whether it be his love for listening to Jazz music or his dedication to learning and playing instruments associated with the genre. His entertaining saxophone skills became apparent during his audition for BTS, capturing the hearts of BigHit Entertainment and securing his spot in the group in 2013. Even though he was still learning to play the saxophone, with his passion and heartfelt connection to his instrument, V must have delivered an excellent performance. In the second season of "In the Soop," V embraced the opportunity to expand his musical horizons by taking trumpet lessons, a testament to his commitment to broadening his musical abilities. The snippets of him learning the trumpet while on 'vacation' demonstrated his remarkable determination to master the basic fundamentals of another jazz instrument.

Remember that one video clip where V was seen dancing to a rendition of the classic song “Fly Me To The Moon” in Las Vegas? Caught up in the swinging rhythm of the song’s melody, instrumentation, and lyrics, V looked as if he was in a world of his own. His smile, the joy on his face, and his swaying dance moves showed just how happy he was to be on the dance floor. He may not have been dancing the foxtrot like the dance couples surrounding him, but he looked like a natural nonetheless.

V’s love for Jazz music is not new to his fans, but every time he shares that passion, ARMYs can’t help but fall in love with him all over again. In fact, whenever any of the BTS members share the music that touches their hearts, many times they invite their fans into a world of new genres, new artists, and new sounds. From this, connections are made between music, artists, and fans, and the power of music once again becomes a universal language.
