Winter Flower (RM x Younha)
For a long time now, RM has shared his admiration for Younha’s music with fans — so this was a long-anticipated collaboration. Wind of it was first caught on December 29, when Younha released the tracklist of her upcoming mini-album with RM as a featured artist on one of the tracks.
The captivating piece speaks of perseverance and metaphorized life’s hardships as the harsh winter. Lyrically, the song paints a vivid picture for the listeners with its visualizing, stimulating terminology whilst encouraging them to ‘hold on,’ as winter will come to an end, suggesting that in the end, people learn from their hardships.
“Listen carefully, winter / You made me bloom.”
— RM, Winter Flower
Sweet Night (V)
With the ending of Park Seojoon’s hit drama “Itaewon Class'' came a new soundtrack. Produced, written, and vocalized by V, the song was released on March 13, 2020, with a soothing melody to match the mood of the drama. What's more, the lyrics are written entirely in English!
The lyrics sum up the doubtful feelings of the character Park Saeroyi over Jo Yiseo in the drama, addressing the two as ‘ships in the night.’ The expression is an analogy for people who meet each other for a brief but intense moment, akin to two ships that pass each other in the night originating from “The Theologician Tales” poem.
“But I had already reached the shore / Guess we were ships in the night, night, night.”
— V, Sweet Night
Eight (SUGA x IU)
Released on IU’s 28th birthday, “Eight” is a track SUGA (also 28) produced and co-wrote. Moreover, it came with a music video that included lively and beautiful animations to depict the message in a creative manner. Adults nearly always get swept away with the rush of life, forgetting about everything and this song addresses exactly that. IU has stated that the song could be considered a short novel of confessions from her 28-year-old self.
Not only does the beat of the song come from SUGA, but he also has his own verse featured on the track. The song ends at 2:47, which can also be thought of as 24/7: every day. Its meaning stems from the fact that every day of a person’s life can get wrapped up in a rush and ultimately spirals into infinity, the ‘8’ turned sideways.
“A morning greeted along with yearning.”
—SUGA, Eight
D-2 (SUGA)
ARMY first started suspecting a mixtape when Big Hit dropped a countdown on their Twitter account, starting at D-7. Assuming the project would drop in seven days, it came as quite the surprise, albeit an exciting one, when the mixtape was released once the countdown reached D-2. With it came an end to the debate of whether the project was SUGA’s or Jungkook’s.
Consisting of ten songs, D-2 features several artists: BTS’ RM, MAX, NiiHWA, and Kim Jong Wan. “Daechwita”, the title track of the mixtape, comes with a vibrant music video which portrays sageuk (a South Korean historical setting) storyline. In the midst of his VLive, Agust-D (a.k.a SUGA) talked about the fact that the arrangement was inspired by traditional Korean military music. This made him think of the BTS and hence inspired the theme of “Daechwita."
“Born in a ditch but rise up a dragon / That’s the way I live.”
— Agust-D, Daechwita
Still With You (Jungkook)
With BTS Festa right around the corner, celebrations for the debut anniversary began with Jungkook’s first official solo release, “Still With You.” The Soundcloud link to the song has the words “thankyouarmy2020”, indicating the song is dedicated to the fans.
A jazzy, R&B instrumental gives the song a dreamy feeling paired with a soft tone in Jungkook's vocals as he promises,” I will look into your eyes / And say, ‘I missed you’”. Amidst DJ SUGA’S Honey FM 06.13, Jungkook spoke about the inspiration behind the track: “I was thinking of making a song that shows my feelings to ARMYs sincerely. One day I was alone in my darkroom and I came up with it, so I ran and worked on the rest of the melody and lyrics at my studio.”
“Behind the faint smile that looked at me / I will draw a beautiful purple shade”
— Jungkook, Still With You
