Records history is BTS’ playground
When thinking about BTS, their history of breaking records comes to mind, right?
BTS’ popularity is not a surprise anymore (mostly). However, it still amazes everyone when they break higher and higher records. People see BTS and ARMY work towards such records and wonder “will they be able to reach it?” We have no doubts about it: BTS’ talent is powerful and speaks volumes of what they deserve.
Setting the standard way too high for others to try to reach is the norm for BTS and ARMY.
Awards Season: Conquered √
BTS have been winning awards since their debut year, 2013. Daesang awards like “Artist of the Year” and “Billboard Top Social Artist” in 2020 make ARMY and BTS happy but are not big news.
However, in 2019, award season hit a lot differently. BTS became the first artist in MAMA history to get a “Daesang All-Kill,” taking home ten trophies, including all Daesang awards and a collaboration award for Yoongi.
Furthermore, in 2019 BTS won Daesang awards for every award show they had a nomination for. This includes Soompi Awards, Melon Music Award, Korean Wave Expo, and many others. It is also worth mentioning that in 2019, BTS was nominated for “Top Social Artist” and “Best Duo/Group” at the Billboard Music Awards, winning a Billboard award for three years in a row.
So far into 2020, BTS have kept going at full speed, getting another “Daesang All-Kill“ at the 34th Golden Disc Awards.
When talking about records…
Award shows are not the only place where BTS have made and continue making history. Social media became the playground for BTS and ARMY. BTS holds the records for “Highest number of Twitter followers for a Korean account” since 2017 and keeps breaking their records. A record that went from 8.7M to today’s 27.7M followers.
What about the number of copies sold for MAP OF THE SOUL: PERSONA? 1,48M copies on “the day it was released.” However, BTS broke their record again with MAP OF THE SOUL: 7. Selling “2.65M copies on its first day of availability,” MAP OF THE SOUL: 7 became first in the “Most Selling Album 2020 GAON Chart” according to Forbes.
Black Swan broke Adele’s record, which she had held for five years, for the most #1 spots on iTunes Top Songs chart, charting #1 in 104 countries as of July 22.
Taehyung, in addition, broke Black Swan’s record getting the most #1 in 115 countries as of August 4.
ARMY loves to say that BTS is BTS’ only competition, and the results are evident.
Namjoon’s MONO reached #1 on iTunes in 116 countries, surpassing Adele's "25" and Taylor Swift's "Reputation,” only behind Ed Sheeran's "Divide" (120), as of August 8.
On the same day, Yoongi’s D-2 became the fastest album by an Asian act to reach #1 in 100 countries, while Yoongi is the only soloist in the World Albums chart. These incidents mean Namjoon and Yoongi are the only Korean soloists in history to reach the most #1 on iTunes.
Your Eyes Tell reached #1 on iTunes in 106 countries, and Seokjin’s Moon reached #1 in 103 countries. BTS also holds the record for most streamed Korean group of all time with 10.7 billion streams.
…Guinness World Records has something to say.
In 2017, BTS held the Guinness World Record (GWR) for “Most viewed music video online in 24 hours by a K-pop group” for DNA, which counts more than 1 billion views right now. They also held the record for “Most Twitter engagements (average retweets) overall and for a music group.”
Later on, in 2018, they became the “First Korean act to reach No.1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart”, “First Korean act to reach No.1 on the Billboard Artist 100,” and “First K-pop group to reach the Top 10 on the US singles chart.”
In 2019, MAP OF THE SOUL: PERSONA won the GWR for “Best-selling album in South Korea,” while BTS became the “Fastest to reach one million followers on TikTok.”
However, 2020’s first half-year saw BTS’ numbers grow steeply, not only on social media and streaming platforms but also for their online concerts. In fact, “BANGBANGCON” holds the GWR for having the “Most viewers for a music concert live stream,” with 756,000 viewers in 107 different countries.
Plans for the future.
Seeing BTS hold so many records and awards make ARMY incredibly happy. That’s why we work so hard together every comeback. BTS taught us that teamwork is the best option.
The world shines the brightest when BTS and ARMY hold hands. The purple road stretches so far ahead of us that it gets lost in the horizon, and we’ll keep on walking.
ARMY believes in BTS, and we know BTS believes in us right back.
