Noraebang (노래방): Karaoke in South Korea

ARMY have you ever heard about noraebang before? The word comes from “norae” (song) and “bang” (room). It is basically a Korean version of karaoke, but instead of you singing in a room full of people, noraebang offers you a small private room where you can sing your heart out as loud as you want and go crazy with your friends. The room will be filled with a huge TV, sofas, table, karaoke machine, disco lights, and thousands of songs for you to choose from. BTS actually has done it before, when they were celebrating FESTA 2020, and in the “RUN BTS!” episode 28.

In FESTA 2020, BTS sang in karaoke, where they were split into 3 sub-units: the members of the first group were Jimin, V, and Jungkook; for the second group we had RM and Jin, and the last but not least was our lovely Suga and J-Hope. Jimin and Jungkook sang "Winter Bear," but V, the original singer, only sat and watched the teammates sing the song. Then the maknae line team continued singing "UGH" and "Outro: Ego.” Our beloved NAMJIN (RM and Jin) duo went for "Outro: Ego," "Seesaw," and "Euphoria." Lastly, SOPE (Suga and J-Hope) sang "Friends" and "The Truth Untold." After they finished the songs, the scores popped up, and they were rewarded with several items, ranging from their old merchandise to the newest Samsung Galaxy Buds.

They had visited a noraebang once before and sang several songs in the “RUN BTS!” episode 28. In this episode, there were some props, like wigs and glasses. The groups were divided into three back then as well: V and SUGA being the first group; RM, Jin, and Jungkook the second group; and J-Hope and Jimin the last pair. The first group sang PSY’s “New Face,” V being the main vocalist, while SUGA gave the support vocals to his teammate. They got 90 points, which is a very nice score.

The second team also used some props; RM dressed up as a king, Jin wore big yellow glasses, meanwhile, Jungkook wore a wig. They chose “Wind Memory” by Naul. RM sang the first part, and the rest of the members were surprised by how good he was, but it didn’t take long before it became chaotic. For all the efforts they made, they only got 81 points.

In the last team, J-Hope put tape on his eyebrows to make them look thicker and made himself look like Rock Lee from Naruto, Jimin being the main character, Naruto himself. They sang Naruto’s theme song, “Gliding.” The group immediately turned themselves into Naruto doing kage bunshin no jutsu. The pair won the battle, getting the highest score among the others, which was 97 points, and they received all the food: meat, rice, and sausages.

ARMYs, if you ever want to listen to the songs that BTS sang in the noraebang, here is the playlist that you can enjoy:

For you, a newbie noraebang seeker in South Korea, we will give you the ABCs before you go to the noraebang and have some fun with your friends.

The first thing is finding a noraebang; you can easily find it in Hongdae, Sinchon, or Konkuk University in Seoul, or Pusan National University Station in Busan.

The second is paying for a room; in coin noraebangs, you pay the number of songs you want to sing, but other noraebangs will rent a room by the hour, and reservations are usually not required. The range is from around 6,00030,000 won (US$525) per hour depending on the facility that they offer for the customers.

The third is entering the room; you have to remove your shoes when you enter the room; it is a common custom in South Korea. You can usually find some props like tambourines or even costumes to wear to lighten up your mood.

Fourth is the song list; it is a karaoke place, of course, so there are going to be tons of songs for you to choose from. All you’ve got to do is open the book featuring the titles of available songs and their numerical codes and punch them in the remote control.

Here is how the remote control of the karaoke looks like:

Afterward, you just need to sing your heart out; the background melodies on the TV/screen are usually very simple. They mostly have a feature for the countdown to indicate where you should begin singing, and letters that change color as you sing. Most noraebangs will have the song’s original key, but some places have a feature that enables you to change it to the key of your preference. There may also be a dial for the echo effect.

Then there is the mood booster, which is for scoring, and the TV/screen to display the score in numerical format. Do not take it personally, though; you can sing as great as Kim Seokjin but you might still get 70, or you can sing recklessly and get a whopping 100; there are no set criteria for scoring.

Lastly, there is the extra time for free; a small number on the monitor will tell you about how much time is left. When it is almost up, you may notice that you suddenly have 20 or so extra minutes. This is what Koreans refer to as “seo-bi-suh” (taken from the English term “service”), which is essentially a product or service provided to a customer free of charge.

Now we know the songs that the boys sing and the tips to go to noraebang. Have fun ARMYs!!!
