Through their eclectic music, dynamic performances, and overall presence in the realms of artistic expression and appreciation, 방탄소년단 aka BTS has become a transformative force. Whether it’s influencing the way fans and the general public perceive and consume music or breaking through societal barriers to expand the global reach of K-pop, as a unit the seven members have demonstrated over and over again the importance of being true to oneself and each other. Not once in their decade-long career have the BTS members shirked their responsibilities, even though they all experienced periods of exhaustion and frustration at different times. Because of this, their beloved fans, ARMY, are well aware that achieving one’s dreams requires perseverance, a commitment to continuous self-improvement, and courage to remain humble and grounded — especially when the fame and fortune is so great.
This is probably why RM’s recent interview with Vogue Korea prompted the title and the overall concept for this week’s blog. As we all know, Kim Namjoon, also known as RM (the leader of BTS), is without exception one of the most articulate young men on this planet (no exaggeration). Just take a look at this quote, “I believe I must consider my life from multiple viewpoints and live each day as fully as possible. I believe creativity comes from a commitment to life and a commitment to play.” Then RM says, “...art ultimately comes from life. I believe I can create something awesome only by continuing to put living and playing at the forefront.” This brings us to the title of our blog, “Life is for Living.”
If life is for living, then what must we do in order to make the most of our existence? This may sound a little philosophical, but it is by no means rhetorical. What must we do and how do we go about it? Actually, RM has given us several clues in his interview, so let’s highlight some of those now. Acknowledging the little things in our lives – our actions, thoughts, moments, feelings – all of these little things add up over time to become our lived experiences and in time, our memories. Acknowledging the people in our lives – whether we’re cultivating new connections or nurturing long-term relationships, sharing our experiences with others can enrich the quality of our lives. It is acknowledging that we have the power to name and claim the spaces and places in our lives. How we choose to live is up to us and while others may try to shape and influence who or what we are, ultimately it is up to each and every one of us to realize our own potential.
ARMYs are seeing this in the ways in which each of the members have chosen to embrace the second chapter of their lives as BTS. Ask anyone who has experienced Agust D in full solo concert mode these past few weeks, and they will tell you that he has transformed significantly. It’s as if the ability to express himself fully and unashamedly has given him a whole new lease on life. The anger has melted away, acceptance has found its way into his life and as a result, SUGA is baring his artistic soul to the world, and fans are loving it!
This brings me back to the fans, ARMY, especially as they too have been experiencing Chapter 2 in their own ways. Sometimes with tears, sometimes with laughter, the journey thus far has been a rollercoaster of emotions for many. Sending two members off to fulfill their military service obligations, while knowing that there are still five members to go brings out the best and worst of emotions. Hopefully, though, ARMYs will continue to be there for each other during these difficult times, while remaining focused on 2025.
Life is for living - an invitation to celebrate our individual uniqueness and an important reminder to embrace those things that bring us joy, fulfillment, and an ongoing sense of purpose.
