Inspiring Minds: How BTS Encourages Learning & Creativity

It is no secret that BTS is an inspiration to many through their music. Their songs can be comforting, exciting, uplifting, and so much more. But how do they, as people, inspire us in our everyday lives? What about BTS makes their fans want to take on new endeavors to enrich and improve their experience of the world?

BTS is a special and rare kind of artist whose effect on their audience reaches beyond simple auditory and visual enjoyment. Their backstory and personality made them into a group that is easy to admire and feel fond of - the type of people you enjoy watching succeed and thrive. Their lyrics and messages to fans are often full of comforting and motivational sentiments that fit any kind of hardships or stages of life one might be going through. The members’ individual personas and approaches to things mesh well together while providing multiple perspectives of how to navigate life’s winding road.

BTS is a group whose art makes people feel good; and when something or someone makes you feel good, there is an inclination to follow their patterns and suggestions to try and conjure up that good feeling from within yourself. When you admire someone’s approach to life, you might like to try it out on your own. Just like seeing a pretty piece of decor in your friend’s house might persuade you to buy a similar item for your own home, seeing how certain habits and interests improve others’ lives might persuade you to try them out - especially when referring to people you look up to.

The first and most apparent way that BTS encourages learning is through language. Being from South Korea, the band often writes, speaks, and sings in Korean. This means that an intrinsic part of enjoying and understanding their eloquent writing (both in lyrics and otherwise) for international fans is translating. Finding accurate translations of posts and lyrics by the group is an essential step to truly, fully experiencing the artistry and emotion that they put into their craft. This language barrier seems to serve less as an actual “barrier,” per say, and more as an enjoyable and accepted part of consuming and interpreting their work. Beyond that, the difference in languages inclines many fans to begin learning Korean for themselves, both to write and/or speak. It is not often that a musical act can inspire so many across the globe to take on learning an entire new language and its writing system.

Going further than the lyrics and words of BTS, the members’ hobbies and interests that they share with fans have also bred worldwide upsurges in the participation of those interests. These often include expanding on music, art, and writing, both as consumers and creators.

In both seasons of their show “In the Soop,” BTS takes time for various activities and challenges that they feel called to. They make paintings that allow them to express their creativity and experiment with different artistic techniques with no pressure, just fun. Some members read books as a relaxing downtime. Lots of music-listening and dancing occurs. In season two, V brings along a trumpet to practice and take lessons on. In season one, RM paints a landscape using a new-to-him method of painting in tiny dots. Suga spends time alone and with the others in a mobile studio set up working on music. J-Hope is seen studying English during some of his free time in the second season. In their variety show “Run! BTS,” the group tries varying activities that call for problem-solving and creativity. The show often provides scenarios for them to dip their hands in multiple kinds of fun challenges, such as building furniture or illustrating children’s stories. They gently and excitedly remind us that you’re never too old to try new things, that the sparks of creativity and curiosity we felt as children are still just as bright now and waiting to be tended to.

BTS often shares their tastes in art and music on their different social media platforms, through Instagram or Twitter posts of songs they’re listening to, Weverse comments about what they’ve been enjoying recently, and posts documenting galleries/museums and libraries or other cultural landmarks they visit. This cultivates an interest in these media and places in their fans, and in turn, creates an upward trend of people visiting places like museums and libraries or draws attention to other talented artists in music and other mediums.

In one news article released earlier this year from The Korea JoongAng Daily, RM’s influence on an increase of traffic to art museums was highlighted, with the article noting that he has helped make art and art museums a more mainstream destination through his visits and social media posts. The members often share screenshots of music they recommend bringing more listeners to those artists, which helps expand the variety and parameters of fans’ listening experiences.

In an age where everything is becoming increasingly digitized, this inclination towards in-person interactions with educational and creative environments is a unique result of the positive influence that BTS has on their fans and pop culture across the globe. Because it should be noted that their effect is not limited solely to their fans, but ripples out from there to gently push young people from all over towards new experiences.

As musicians and people, BTS brings significant joy and comfort to the world. Their journey as a group, the thoughts and feelings they share with us, and the music they create inspire and motivate people all over the world to try, to learn, to express, and to create. A resounding message of “you can do it” permeates their atmosphere. Their place as role models in the eyes of many, bolstered by the impressive quality (and quantity) of their work and a knack for expressing both positivity and authenticity, make them leaders in a widespread rise of the art of believing in yourself and trying new things.
