Injuries do not exist in any job description, but it is something that is bound to happen, especially for a job that demands a lot of physical work. BTS is no exception; with the amount of dancing they have to do and back-to-back performances, injuries are inevitable.
PHYSICALLY DEMANDING
BTS is known for their intense choreography that even professionals find it difficult when trying to replicate their moves. Hard twists, far-jump, quick footwork, various formations, and having neat compositions results in hours of practice and perfection until the mirror is fogged up. Being the professional artists they are, BTS would still run through the choreography minutes before going onto the stage. With a jam-packed schedule, little resting time, and performing more than twenty songs (during concerts) back-to-back, injuries become inevitable.
Jimin seems to be the most likely to experience an unfortunate moment that usually impedes his ability to perform. The main dancer has mentioned his chronic back and leg pain several times, and how he must live with it for as long as he remains in that line of work.

An accident that took place in 2012 damaged SUGA’s left shoulder. He admitted getting several shots on his shoulder to decrease inflammation and allow his shoulder to move more freely without pain. In 2019, his left shoulder was diagnosed with “Posterior Labral Tear.” SUGA then decided to undergo surgery for good on Nov. 3, 2020, and said: “Please understand this time as being my chance to prepare to meet you again strong and healthy.”
BTS’ Weverse Announcement
Back in 2016, BTS’ leader caused concern over his absence in the middle of “The Most Beautiful Moment On Stage: Epilogue” concert. On the following day, Big Hit released a statement about the heat and lack of oxygen being the main cause of RM’s shortness of breath which had led to his non-attendance.
Jungkook, being the maximizing dancer of the group, is also prone to getting injuries. ARMYs have witnessed several times when the singer almost fainted on stage and a clip from “Burn The Stage” showed how Jungkook had overworked his body to the brink of fainting. He also had to sit out during the “Love Yourself” Tour in London in 2018 after getting several stitches near his left heel.
The remaining three members were no exception either. At “One Asia Festival” in 2016, Jin’s left ear got injured when standing near an explosion during his performance. He became a victim of a fireworks explosion a second time when the ashes went into his eyes during a “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself” tour.
J-Hope also inhaled some fireworks smoke at “K-Pop World Festival 2017,” which resulted in him coughing non-stop. Because of it, he was forced to leave the stage for a while.
V and SUGA were absent from “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life On Stage” in Kobe, Japan, and were rushed to the hospital for a detailed check-up. The two were diagnosed with nausea due to large movements during concerts. Big Hit then canceled the concert to prioritize V’s and SUGA’s full recovery.
Fainting seems to happen often for the boys as well. Jimin fainted once because of low blood pressure during a Japan fan meeting in 2015. J-Hope also got admitted to the hospital after fainting at the set of the “Boy In Luv” music video. Fortunately, he recovered quickly after some IV treatment and returned to continue filming the following day. The others were seen to be on the verge of fainting several times on stage before, and they relied on one other to prevent falling.
BTS also has difficult songs that pushed them to stretch their vocal range to the fullest. Sore throats and voice cracks are bound to come from this, mostly due to the over-exhaustion of their vocal cords. Combined with the difficult choreography, it is completely understandable for BTS to experience these moments.
MENTALLY DRAINING
In some cases, injuries leave a bitter feeling within the members; the inability to perform on stage and meet their fans could potentially lead to a form of self-loathing. More often than not, BTS spoke up about their feelings post-injuries, how they were afraid of disappointing their fans, how they felt dejected and blamed themselves for what happened.
But Big Hit, fortunately, has an amazing staff who always kept their backs. They always remind the septet that sometimes bad things do happen which are completely out of a person’s control, and it certainly will never be their fault as a group or individual members. Big Hit continues to show how they prioritize their artists’ health and let them completely recover before allowing them back onto the stage.
ARMY also shows their respect and understanding towards their idols by reminding BTS to take it slow, to be lenient on themselves, and by continuously supporting them during hard times. Slowly and surely, BTS started to gain more confidence. They grew to accept anything that comes in their way, embracing their low moments and turning their self-loathe into a promise to do better next time.
