What is Post Concert Depression?
Any music lover who has attended a concert can tell you how empty the days following it are, how the concert feels like something far away, almost like an out-worldly experience. And when the realization hits that it did happen and it is indeed over, the aftermath is a catastrophe. Have you been there?
This phenomenon is named Post Concert Depression (PCD) and it has no mercy for anyone. No matter the genre you listen to, the artist you love, and whether your favorite song was played or not, most people have experienced the post-concert blues. It might not be scientifically proven and something that not everyone experiences, but to most people, PCD is a real thing, and a big deal.
Clinging onto the fun and the start of the blues.
You might have noticed that the moment the last song of the setlist finishes and the music stops, there are a few moments of disoriented silence, in which the audience hesitate before starting to pack their stuff to leave, wishing for the artist to perform a surprise song and let them have fun for just a little longer. This is how PCD starts.
On your way home, disappointment hits in the realization that it is already over. You might want to keep the experience of the concert alive by listening to the artist’s songs while on the road. But soon you’ll feel too sad to listen to them, because the images and memories of all the fun you had during the concert will burn behind your eyelids, making it almost impossible to listen to the artist.
That is the peak of PDC when you’re stuck between reliving the concert over and over but trying to get closure while thinking about saving money for the next concert. Some people even go for extended periods of time without being able to listen to the artist’s music.
But then things smooth out. One day you wake up and realize that you’ve come to terms with it; you accept the concert has been over for a while, even though you were clinging to it like a lifeline, and you finally let go.
On the contrary, if you haven’t experienced the post-concert blues and you’re good to go right after the concert, this is because you don’t hold onto the experience in the same way. You come to an early realization and satisfaction that you had fun and you know that you’ll always keep the happy memories in a little corner of your heart.
2020 got in the way…
2020 has made a mess of people’s plans to attend concerts and events. This, of course, also includes ARMY.
When BTS announced the MAP OF THE SOUL TOUR back in January, ARMY were over the moon with happiness, joking with each other on social media about outfits and plans to meet long-distance ARMY friends.
However, the outbreak of COVID ruined our plans as many tours and concerts were canceled or postponed. Of course, we know it was the right choice, but that doesn’t stop people from being disappointed. Big Hit’s announcement temporarily put our plans for the tour on hold; meanwhile, we made sure, and are still making sure, to respect anti-COVID norms so that the pandemic ends as soon as possible.
… but ARMY won’t give in!
During these hard times, ARMY have been incredibly busy. BTS have not abandoned us. On the contrary, they have worked hard to stay connected to us.
ARMY’s comments on Weverse have let BTS know that nothing will separate us. They have kept the love and support flowing between us, while their live streams, the BangBangCon (BBC) and FESTA have kept ARMY company, have kept us excited to see them, even if only in a virtual way.
PCD hit differently this year for us, but that doesn’t mean we have not experienced the blues after both BBC and BBC: The Live. There is a chance the BBC related PCD has been even more intense than previously, mixed with the sadness of the tour cancellation and the knowledge of COVID-19 breakout that is keeping us from seeing them live this year and until further notice in 2021.
Waiting for good news in 2021.
While we wait for news about the new MAP OF THE SOUL TOUR schedule, ARMY and BTS will stay connected and keep the conversation open and flowing. There is no doubt that all of us will grow from this experience as BTS and ARMY learn from each other and hold a mutually precious relationship.
Wanting to be together again goes both ways. At the end of the day, ARMY and BTS know we’ve got each other, always and forever.
