"Growing up in South Korea, we always dreamt about standing on the Grammy's stage. Thank you to all our fans for making this dream come true, and we'll be back."
- RM (BTS), Grammy Awards 2019
The start of a new decade is fast approaching, and BTS has been shaking up both the Korean and international music scenes for the past 6 years. Their growth has been a roller coaster with ARMY along for the ride. 2019 alone was a year filled with a multitude of opportunities that came their way and records that was blown out of the water.
Despite standing in the limelight, where adverse reactions cannot be avoided, BTS managed to succeed even ARMY's expectations. The boys hit headlines and earned the favor of both critics and the general public. To sum it up, BTS knocked a number of items off their bucket lists this year.
To welcome the new year, Borasaek Vision curated five major BTS dreams that our guys achieved this year. Come revisit them with us!
Dream 1: Speak Yourself Tour
Remember when the ARMY was still enjoying the BTS World Tour: Love Yourself content?
BAM! There’s a surprise announcement from Big Hit’s YouTube channel: a stadium extension to the tour, titled BTS World Tour Love Yourself: Speak Yourself. ARMY definitely won’t forget the excitement for the extension BTS performed in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Speak Yourself was a big achievement for BTS - sold out tickets, earning the title of being the first Asian act to sell out the Rose Bowl, and having two sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium. This achievement made ARMY so proud of the boys.
Dream 2: Exposure to International Music Critics
BTS has been achieving numerous awards, topping music charts, and performing in shows outside of South Korea. Yet, their biggest achievement this year - when it comes to this category - is the GRAMMYs. The album cover of Love Yourself: Tear made it to the Best Recording Package nomination. That fact alone made ARMY proud. Their appearance at the prestigious awards show with Korean-made tuxedos grabbed the attention of the press, but what really struck from the event was becoming the first K-pop group to present a GRAMMY award. Not only that, but BTS were also invited to an exclusive winners-only photoshoot, and were interviewed in the GRAMMY Museum. Not to get our hopes up, but who knows? Maybe they will achieve Yoongi’s GRAMMY dream next time.
Dream 3: Map of the Soul: Persona
Of course, Map of the Soul: Persona had to be included in this list. BTS released MOTS: Persona April 12, 2019. ARMY was awestruck, listening from RM’s dynamic Intro: Persona to the upbeat Dionysius. Their collaboration with Halsey for the title track Boy with Luv proved its power right away, garnering over 76.6 million views within its first day of release.
Dream 4: Month-long hiatus
The announcement of BTS’ hiatus after working non-stop for six years came out as a shock for all. As Big Hit phrased from their announcement, “BTS will return fresh and recharged.” The ARMY responded with an astounding amount of positivity, expressing happiness for the boys’ well-deserved rest.
As Big Hit released their statement regarding the hiatus that started on August 11, they asked ARMY to respect the group’s privacy. Yet, BTS themselves shared their activities during their hiatus on Twitter, such as museum and nature visits. It was refreshing to see the boys enjoy their 20s, which is a dream, Kpop idols rarely indulge in.
Dream 5: Daesang Sweep
Before 2019 ends, BTS achieved yet another dream. The boys emerged as kings with their Daesang sweep, dominating both the Melon Music Awards and the Mnet Asian Music Awards. For the MMA 2019, BTS received the Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year awards.
MAMA 2019, on the other hand, acknowledged BTS with the Album of the Year, Worldwide Icon of the Year, Song of the Year, and Artist of the Year awards. Like usual, RM dedicated these awards to their fans, showcasing the bond between BTS and ARMY that made this winning streak a reality.
Thanks for revisiting these milestones with us! Aside from these five major dreams-achieved, we selected, tell us your favorite moments!
Happy New Year and continue dreaming; bigger things are just around the corner!
