ARMYs love to see the seven members together, interacting with each other and genuinely caring for one another — a feature of their relationship that has naturally evolved over time. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing though, and the members openly acknowledge (often in jest) the bickering and disagreements that occurred over the years, and again, there is nothing unusual in that either. When seven strangers become a group, there are many wrinkles to be ironed out, conversations to be had, and new paths to be navigated.
Yet somehow, through all their ups and downs, both personal and professional, BTS has managed to do something that seems phenomenal to outsiders. They have remained humble, sincere, and caring, while at the same time, juggling titles such as, ‘K-pop megastars,’ ‘global superstars,’ or ‘icons of progressive globalism.’ With hopes of recreating that success, many want to know the secret formula, because surely their (BTS’) model is replicable. If those same entities took the time to really know BTS though, they would soon learn there’s no mysticism, cheap trickery, or brainwashing going on. The BTS members have shown themselves many times to be chaotic yet disciplined, mischievous yet professional, and vulnerable yet still a force to be reckoned with.
When they speak, they do so with conviction and clarity — yet still, their words are twisted or their actions misconstrued. Yet time and time again, they have shown the world that kindness can be revolutionary — an act of defiance as much as an act of charity and goodwill. Kindness doesn’t require grand sweeping gestures (although these are possible as well). Rather, expressions of kindness can be seen or experienced in many shapes and forms, both publicly and privately. In fact, this is probably another attribute of BTS that stands out, as many of their acts of kindness only become apparent after the act has taken place. People from all walks of life have shared personal experiences of receiving kindness from the members directly or witnessing those moments taking place around them: people such as support staff, backup dancers, interviewers, broadcasters, industry peers, and fans.
When it comes to the ARMY fandom, fans may also experience kindness from the BTS members in multiple forms. BTS dedicating songs to ARMYs is one way, another is when the members take time out of their busy schedules to do live streams. Likewise, each of the members are caring and considerate in their own ways as well. SUGA prepared little care packages to share with fans on his birthday while j-hope rescued a kitten. Jin composed “Super Tuna” for ARMYs, and RM continues to share his love for art with others through his vlogs and photo galleries. We can’t forget that priceless moment when V went in search of an extra chair for one of the Nu'est members during an awards show or Jung Kook talking to fans, shaking hands, or signing autographs during his personal time. Then, of course, there is Jimin, who always seems to be nearby to offer words of comfort or a much-needed hug to his members during times of struggle.
When we cast our eyes out to the world which we live in, including the fandom itself, we are able to recognize countless acts of kindness. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true, and too often kindness, generosity, care, and consideration are not present. We’ve probably all witnessed it or experienced it at some point in our lives, either on social media or in our real lives, and for many life can seem unbearable and hope can erode down to hopelessness. In those moments, we may need to dig deep to find ourselves again, and for thousands of fans, perhaps millions, BTS has been the metaphorical ‘shining light’ in their lives. The light that helped them find their way, gave them hope and lifted their spirits. This perhaps is the greatest kindness that BTS has given the world and the seven members may never truly know just how much of a difference they have made to the lives of ARMYs.
With a repertoire of music spanning the nine years of their career thus far, there is a BTS song for every mood and occasion. Whether you’re with them to the end of your days or just for a moment in time, their lyrics can be the panacea to all ills. So many ARMYs have shared their experiences and talked about those pivotal moments that changed their lives and for many, the courage needed to share those stories is heartwarming and heartfelt. Through the collective stories shared by ARMYs, we begin to appreciate the magnitude of how much BTS and their music has transformed lives and restored hope.
J-hope’s lyrics (as shared by Doolset) are here to remind us that “it costs ya nothin’ to be kind” — it’s something that anyone and everyone can do. We all deserve to be respected, regardless of age, gender, or nationality and although each of us is different, it is our differences that make us unique. Acts of kindness, whether random or prepared, public or private are expressions of love, trust, and respect, for ourselves as much as they are for others. If we can appreciate this then perhaps, “the breaths we breathe and the dreams we dream… will all make sense one day.”
