Practicing social distancing and staying at home is not an excuse for BTS to stop doing what they love and to stop discovering new things. The recent pandemic has left a negative impact on many people, including BTS. Even still, these global stars find a way to keep their spirits uplifted by spending their time not only for resting and making new content, but also trying to learn new things they hadn't gotten the opportunity to do before.
During his radio live “DJ Suga’s Honey FM 06.13,” SUGA answered a question from an ARMY about how he has been spending his time lately. He mentioned studying English along with Psychology and Philosophy in relation to the human psyche and brain. He even revealed one of his goals is to get certification/licensed to become a Psychologist.
“Why do I want a counseling license? When I meet people like me, there is something I want to tell them. I think about this a lot. When I see them, I want to be of help.”
SUGA has been seen carrying psychological books along the years of his career. The latest was when the rapper was leaving the venue after “Bang Bang Con: The Live." He was carrying a book called “Reinventing Your Life” by two psychologists; Janet S. Klosko and Jeffrey E. Young. The book is widely known for teaching readers how to end self-destructive behaviors that stop people from living their best life with a breakthrough program, without the aid of drugs or long-term traditional therapy.
From “In The SOOP” Teaser 2, another book was spotted on SUGA’s hand. “Almond," a novel by Won-Pyun Sohn, telling a story about a 16-year-old boy who has Alexithymia, the inability to identify and express emotions. The title “Almond” refers to the shape of the Amygdala, a part of the brain that is responsible for human emotions. The boy’s underdeveloped amygdala resulted in alexithymia.
Another (not) surprising news came around at the beginning of July. RM, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin, and V were reported to have entered or are planning to enroll in a post-graduate university, Hanyang Cyber University. Following the path of their oldest brother, these five members planned to study Advertising and Media for their MBA program.
Hanyang Cyber University is one of Korea’s virtual universities that offer courses in engineering, social science, foreign languages, law, design, economics, and business administration (which covers the Advertising and Media course).
Later, Big Hit stated that RM, SUGA, and J-Hope have enrolled since March 2019, while Jimin and V will begin in September 2020. Jin was the first to enroll in 2017, a month after graduating with a bachelor's degree in Art and Acting from Konkuk University. The youngest Jungkook, who graduated from high school in 2017, was arguably still studying at Global Cyber University, where all the members except Jin pursued their bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment.
Not only pursuing their study at formal institutions, BTS has also adapted the word “learning” into their daily vocabulary. On July 17, through his Weverse’s post, RM shared a picture of the TOEIC exam paper, stating further in the comments section that he is doing the TOEIC for the first time in 10 years for fun.
On the most recent VLive called “JiJinJung,” Jin admitted he was still interested in improving his skill in playing the piano, while SUGA stated he was learning guitar. He also revealed solving calculus problems is his way to relieve stress. All of the members admitted that they have also been studying English, as Jungkook mentioned a specific language academy where he masters his English; Siwon School. This language academy offers courses in other languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, German, Thai, French, and Vietnamese.
Being Global Artists is not an excuse for BTS to stop discovering new things that are not related to their career. With a jam-packed schedule, the septet have proven that if we are willing to do something and put our hearts to it, we will always be able to make time. Many ARMYs have voiced their amazement towards their idols and admitted that they are motivated by BTS’ spirit.
Once again, BTS have proven that they are not just an ordinary idol group.
