Time is indeed flying like an arrow in the sky, and days have passed by without mercy, giving us no time to breathe. 2020 was, without a doubt, the hardest year for most people all over the world. Landing without a crash has been very hard to pursue lately, and the end of the tunnel seems to be nowhere in sight, leading to more thoughts as to whether these moments will come to an end or not.
Still, it doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to hope and dream for a better future. Social distancing prevents us from meeting our loved ones. But, a bond between souls who love each other is hard to break. No matter how far the distance lies between us, we’re still connected by thoughts and heart.
The same goes for artists under Big Hit Labels and their fans. As a gift to soothe the soreness that 2020 has given us, Big Hit held the 2021 New Year’s Eve Live as a bridge between 2020 and 2021.

Ushering the theme of “We’ve Connected,” Big Hit mentioned on their announcement that the concert would be “connecting together the hearts of Big Hit Labels artists and fans all around the world.” The final line-up was gradually announced on Nov. 10–12, 2020, presenting BTS, TXT, Enhypen, Gfriend, Nu’est, Lee Hyun, and Bumzu, featuring special appearances from Halsey, Lauv, and Steve Aoki, with the addition of a tribute stage to Shin Hae Chul, South Korea’s late rock icon.
Hanbin, one of the contestants from the survival show “I-Land,” presented the pre-opening stage, hyping up the viewers before the actual concert began. Following this, the viewers were welcomed by the artists of Big Hit Labels through a powerful VCR – thrilling and capturing for the fans!

Enhypen, the youngest artists under the label, received the honor of officially opening the setlist with their B-side “Let Me In (20 CUBE).” TXT performed next, with songs from their 2020 albums, followed by Bumzu and Lee Hyun. SUGA gave the speech as an introduction to the tribute performance, which was presented by two sub-units from the members of TXT, Enhypen, Nu’est, Lee Hyun, and Bumzu.

Right after the tribute, Gfriend opened their performance with “Time for the Moon Night” and Nu’est with “Overcome.” Similar to BTS and missing a member, Gfriend had to perform without Umji, who had to sit back due to her leg injury.

Prior to the final performance by BTS, each of the performers made a speech, retelling special memories of their life in 2020, as well as some hopes and wishes for 2021. BTS’ performance was split into two sections: two songs before the countdown to 2021, and four songs that opened ARMYs’ first day of 2021. Steve Aoki, Lauv, and Halsey made a special appearance on “Mic Drop,” “Make it Right,” and “Boy With Luv.” BTS then closed the whole concert with their latest title track, “Life Goes On,” presenting heartwarming speeches before the beginning of the last chorus.

A meet and greet was also held at the same time. Fans who had purchased the meet and greet ticket could watch it without exiting the concert, which was through choosing a camera from the multi-view mode.
Overall, Big Hit has done a good job with their first-ever family concert. Even when the offline portion of the concert had to be canceled due to the increasing cases of COVID-19, the whole “We’ve Connected” theme and messages transcended all the barriers between the artists and the fans. With fewer artists present at the concert, unlike the usual year-end shows, each of the groups and soloists had more than five minutes of speeches to interact with the viewers and were able to dedicate more than three songs, including special dance breaks, sub-unit stages, and solo performances in between.
They put a massive effort into each artist, choosing the songs that touched and lifted the fans' hearts, emphasizing each artists’ colors and uniqueness, together with the use of virtual reality, holograms, and even giving a drone performance for the countdown. None of the artists were left out. The special speech from each group leader and the two soloists were also one of the highlights of the concert.
Most of the feedback about the concert was positive. Some of the viewers even admitted there wasn’t any boring point, and each song performed was poking their curiosity.
Hopefully, once again, we will be able to witness another Big Hit Family Concert in the near future, not just through online streaming but also in-person, as before.
