Sophisticated and suave one minute, playful and flamboyant the next, when it comes to BTS’ eldest member Kim Seok-jin there is no denying that he has left an indelible impression in the hearts and minds of millions of people across the world. He started out in life as a devoted son who just wanted to make his mother proud; fortuitously, he has been able to achieve that dream and so much more. Now in his 10th year as the ‘Worldwide Handsome’ member of BTS, he is very much an accomplished singer/songwriter recognized for his ‘silvery’ voice, natural beauty, unequaled fashion sense, and charismatic personality.
December 4th marks another milestone in the life of Kim Seok-jin. By international standards, he will be 30 this year. However, by Korean age standards Jin will be 32 years old. As we all know now, Jin’s enlistment, although hinted at previously, has finally been confirmed with the publication of his basic training location. There, he will undergo several weeks of rigorous training, preparing him to become an elite soldier in the Republic of Korea’s Armed Forces. Jin has mentioned that he will be deployed to the front-line military unit, and more recently he put out a message to his beloved fans advising them against physically traveling to bid him farewell due to safety concerns.
In the meantime, ARMYs continue to bathe themselves in the warm inviting pool of ‘Jin-related’ content that has been flowing onto our screens and no one is complaining. His newest merchandise has just been teased as part of his solo album promotions for “The Astronaut,” and many fans have high hopes of coming out winners once the products hit the Weverse shop. Fans have also been treated to a few Korean variety shows featuring Jin where his Worldwide Handsome status has played its part in livening up the friendly banter amongst the shows’ participants.
Seeing celebrities excited at the prospect of Jin being on the same show as them has been extremely entertaining. Likewise, seeing Jin hold his own when faced with various twists and turns reaffirms his quick-wittedness. No doubt, the many years spent with his six younger BTS brothers helped prepare him for moments such as these. It’s also heartwarming to see that although Jin has expressed difficulty in meeting people for the first time, especially celebrities, his humor, and easy-going personality endear him to all who cross his path.
There aren’t many people in this world who can say that they were able to perform their own solo debut song on stage with their favorite artist, especially when that artist is the world-renowned band Coldplay. Yet that is exactly what Jin achieved last month when he performed “The Astronaut'' in Argentina with Coldplay. In one of Borasaek Vision’s recent blogs titled Defining Home: “The Astronaut” Review, writer Sav wrote of how ARMYs were able to experience Jin’s “clear and resonating declaration of 'I love you,' reminding everyone that 'the specific expression of love, of making sure that this is known and heard, is one of the most important exchanges two hearts can make.”
That’s how it is with Kim Seok-jin, who is especially sensitive to the feelings of his fans now as he prepares to take leave from BTS in order to fulfill his military duties. Not wanting ARMYs to be saddened by his departure for too long, Jin has been preparing content for the past year, if not longer — content that is now showing us different aspects of his personality, personal interests, and professionalism.
The past ten years of BTS’ career have shown us that Jin is the epitome of optimism and living proof that hard work and persistence pays off in the end. Even in those moments where he may have struggled with self-doubt, disappointment, or negative emotions, Jin has been able to find his way back because of music and his love for ARMY. The catchphrase “Worldwide Handsome” may have originated in jest, but there is no denying that Kim Seok-jin is as beautiful on the inside, as he is on the outside.
