I and We: Let’s Shine Together

Every person in this world has a talent, and it will make them shine if they know how to show it. At the same time, it won’t make them shine less if they want to participate in a group to achieve the goal together by combining the talent of every individual. Each of us has our own voice, and we should never let anyone take it away from us. Through our voices, we can encourage others to voice out their mind and make a better environment around us.

BTS showed us a couple of times how to give a whole heart to contribute to a team without making oneself less valuable. For example, in their recent album BE, V had to put his song “Blue & Grey” into the album instead of his personal mixtape because everyone thought the song was more suitable for the album. RM said that not as many of his lyrics, as usual, were included in the album. RM also helped the other members to develop their own writing or composing skills, more than working on his own. Each member had their own role in creating this beautiful masterpiece; with the talents they have, they helped each other to make sure that they could achieve their goal – by making an album for everyone to enjoy.

Back in the days when they were rookies, Bang PD asked RM a question; he wanted RM to choose between staying with BTS or be a soloist. Without any hesitation, RM chose BTS because he felt that his heart was there; he belonged to BTS no matter what. We also know that J-Hope once felt like leaving the group, but Jung Kook convinced him to stay because he is a part of the group and he will always be. We surely wouldn’t have BTS today if one of the members was not part of the group.

The examples that BTS gave to ARMY make fans create their own movement to show that we are beautiful as individualists, yet wonderful as collectivists. ARMY is called the best fandom for a reason; there are a lot of accounts that help BTS achieve their goals and also help ARMY develop their individual skills. These can be voting accounts, funding accounts, translation accounts, and even accounts sharing and creating BTS-related cooking recipes.

ARMY believes what BTS believes – teamwork makes the dream work. Every time BTS is nominated for an award and needs votes, voting accounts come to help and organize the voting, showing the results, telling us how much we have done, and how much more we have to go.

People might think it is hard for international fans to understand what the boys say because they mostly talk in Korean, but ARMYs created translation accounts to help other folks understand what BTS talk about in every interview they have. The accounts are either run by a single person or a team of dedicated translators; they have the ability to understand the language and the talent to help others also understand what BTS talk about.

There are also accounts dedicated to teaching languages for free from social media; they usually create a group chat to make it easier for everyone to access the course. It is also run by talented ARMYs in order to make the others understand a language of their choice and be able to use basic conversation in real life. No one has been asked to do this, but ARMYs make this happen because they feel it is good to help and shine together with other ARMYs.

Borasaek Vision Magazine is also another example of the beauty of individualism and collectivism. Each of us is from a different background and we have different talents, but the team works together so that ARMYs can read and find out more about BTS, and also to create a platform for each of us to write, create, design, and to show our love for BTS.

During BTS’ speech in the UN, RM encouraged us to find our voice and tell our story, let the world listen to our voice. He said,

“I would like to ask all of you. What is your name? What excites you and makes your heart beat? Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin colour, gender identity: speak yourself. Find your name, find your voice by speaking yourself.”

Despite all the differences that ARMYs have, we are all beautiful and unique in our own way and we should be proud of it. Our uniqueness is even more delightful when we come together as a team to create a lovely and safe environment for all of us.
