A few months ago BTS was supposed to be on tour, touring places such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and Toronto. However, due to the current world climate, they have had to cancel their tour, much to our conflicting disappointment but also to our relief. The fanbase I would like to introduce to you today decided to dedicate the tour dates for charities. For this month’s Fanbase Spotlight, I take you to the Northern Americas where ARMY has set up a fanbase named Map of the Heart.
On March 20th, 2020, the fan base ‘Map of the Heart’ announced the organization of their "donation tour". Like many other fan projects, Map of the Heart was likely inspired by BTS’ charitable ways, something that has become a running theme of talk in the last few months. The idea was to thank BTS for making a difference in ARMY’s world, by spreading the purple love to the general public. Map of the Heart put together a list of nine charities to donate to, each charity corresponding to a particular city BTS would have visited should their tour have taken place.
"We wanted to be able to thank BTS for all of the hard work they put into this comeback and tour. With this project, we hope to show the members how much dedication we have for them but to also spread positivity to our own and other communities."
Starting from April 11th they provided information and links directing ARMY to donate to a selected charity depending on the city. The fan project provided direct links to the charity’s page rather than collecting money and giving a mass donation. Heal the Bay in Los Angeles, Clean the World in Orlando, and UNICEF in Newark were just some of the charities or not-for-profit organizations that were promoted during the donation tour. For each charity, Map of the Heart gave special attention in providing accurate information about the chosen organization, making up easy-to-read graphics to inform the fans. The charities that were chosen covered issues such as plastics in the ocean, to immigrant and refugee aid through to aiding the homeless youth.
Initially, the fan project dedicated a time period where they promoted one specific charity to which ARMY was able to donate money towards, for example, Project Open Hand in Santa Clara was promoted from April 11th till April 26th, after which the fan project moved their promotions on to the next charity. However, on May 11th, Map of the Heart updated ARMY on their project through their twitter page by stating that ARMY can donate to any of the charities promoted by the fanbase up until June 15th.
During the month of May, Map of the Heart directed their attention towards promoting and advocating for the Black Lives Matter movement - directing ARMY towards donation links to support this movement and providing links to support the black community. On top of promoting the BLM movement, Map of the Heart also maintained their promotions towards their chosen charities.
Although the Map of the Heart account seems to be currently inactive, and there has not been any further information regarding the completion of the donation tour that they had initiated in the beginning of this year, their efforts in spreading ARMY’s value of helping others is still truly notable and commendable. Map of the Heart may have been a small fan project, but no doubt for those involved and for the charities and people who benefited from this good deed, it was certainly something to appreciate. The fan project further pushes the idea that if a single ARMY is inspired by BTS to help others and better the world then that is more than enough. That is why for the month of August, the Fanbase Spotlight shines over Map of the Heart.
