ARMY has a reputation for helping those in need, and that extends to BTS and ARMY. One such fanbase saw the need to provide free tutoring services for ARMYs who may not have the opportunity to access tutors or attend private lessons. Today, we are featuring an amazing fanbase, ARMY ACADEMY, and have had the privilege of interviewing the founder, Fer.
“[ARMY ACADEMY] launch projects...along with tutoring. We are a platform for ARMYs who do not have the opportunity to have a private tutor or access to special classes for many reasons. We want to help [ARMY] as much as we can.”
The inspiration for the fanbase stemmed from both BTS and the need to help students with their academics. Fer explains, “When the album Love Yourself: Tear came out, I was going through a hard time. BTS’s message, however, made me realize the importance of loving myself, and I discovered that for me, a perfect way to do that was by helping others. With that idea in mind, I spent weeks trying to find a project I could join, but when I saw a tweet of an ARMY in my timeline asking for help with a math problem, everything changed. By helping her I realized that I could put the skills that once I disliked into good use. That’s when I decided to create my own project: ARMY ACADEMY. It not only helps other ARMYs, but it also helps me heal in some way.”
And help others ARMY ACADEMY has certainly accomplished! With six total branches within the organization, twenty sub-divisions, over 300 volunteer tutors and a twitter following of over 46 thousand and growing, it is safe to say ARMY ACADEMY has made an impact within the ARMY community.
“ARMY ACADEMY provides free 24/7 academic tutoring to high school and college students around the world. We are all volunteers, and our goal is to help ARMYs with their studies, spreading BTS’ message of love and teamwork...Apart from tutoring, we also organize courses for ARMYs to learn a language or get better in one, preparation for the SAT or ACT exams, and many more!”
Tutoring lessons vary in accordance with each subject. Some lessons, such as in a Mathematics lesson, prioritize explaining the topic and solving sample exercises. While other lessons allow for feedback on projects, finding and correcting errors, proofreading and suggesting new ideas for their projects. In their Learning Centre division, general help is given to students who struggle with studying, including providing a study plan to kickstart your study routine!
ARMY ACADEMY not only provides tutoring services, but they also have created their own Korean Course! “We have many projects in mind that we hope to develop in the following months,” says Fer, “We plan to open many more courses and projects for [beginner level] students to learn...different skills, or to continue learning….We are excited to launch the projects we have been working on!” So keep your eyes peeled for new projects and courses to come, there may be a course you are interested in coming very soon! It would be remiss, however, to think all the effort put into the project is done by one ARMY alone. “Behind the scenes, there is a lot of work going on daily: connecting students with tutors, tutoring, interviewing volunteers, designing the material, tweeting, and doing research for our projects.” Running such a monumental volunteer organization takes up a lot of time and resources.
Helping run ARMY ACADEMY are many admins and their teams working in designated departments. “To complete all of [the] tasks, we divide our more than 40 admins by teams: HR Team, Design Team, Research Team, Student Service Team and the SNS Team. Each of our main admins...are in charge of each team and do a great job managing them and making sure the tasks are completed. Additionally, we divide our more than 300 tutors by subjects (currently more than 20) and organize them in Group Chats within the 6 different accounts we manage: @armytutormath, @armyscience, @army_language, @armytutor_art, [@armytutorscs] and @army_learning. Since tutoring happens [24/7], we work together to make sure students are getting help... Teamwork makes the dream work!”
In mentioning how large the project has become, Fer emphasizes the support from ARMY and the inspiration from BTS:
“We are so happy for the support we receive from ARMY. I never expected ARMY ACADEMY to grow this way, to be honest. Thanks a lot to ARMY who has been very supportive of our projects. We promise to continue working hard so we can help more of you! To BTS, thank you for everything you do. From your message to your life-lessons, you are the main inspiration to our team. We promise to continue spreading your message. We purple you!”
