New Take on Language Appreciation

Source: https://twitter.com/bts_bighit

BTS may be a group from South Korea, but that does not mean that their fans are only from South Korea. Their fans, called ARMYs, are from around the world. Yes, we speak different languages and are from different countries, but we all love the same group.

People sometimes wonder how we could be so loyal and support them although we do not understand their language without translation. This is proof that no matter what language we speak, we can appreciate and enjoy good music. It also tells us that we can talk to each other even though we do not speak each other’s tongues.

Despite the different languages that we speak, ARMYs will always find a way to understand what BTS wants to say to their fans. ARMYs across countries and platforms will provide translations to help others who cannot speak and understand Korean. HYBE themselves usually provide translations in English for their YouTube Videos and Music Videos as well.

Different languages means different cultures; if we learn a new language, it means automatically that we will absorb their cultures as well. These days, it’s easy to learn a second, third, or even fourth language from anywhere. There are free platforms that you can use such as Duolingo or Mango language for free or relatively cheap. If you want to just translate because you are curious about what the boys said, you can use Google Translate or Papago while waiting for the translator ARMYs to help you. If you are interested in learning Korean, you can go to https://twitter.com/BangtanAcademy_ for their free course to learn.

There are a lot of translation accounts that translate what BTS says during the concerts or live streams, one of them is https://twitter.com/BTStranslation. ARMYs will give their time to translate what BTS say to each other or whenever they interact with ARMYs through Weverse account. So if you are a baby ARMY or you want to learn Korean, there are a lot of ways to learn, just spare some time to learn ― you will make it there someday!

If you think learning through a class is not something for you, you can learn through BTS’ songs or even films and series. There are several options of genres that BTS offers, so you can choose what you enjoy listening to and learn from those. If you watch or listen to music daily, you will definitely gain a word or two that you can memorize and in time, be able to use it ― even just for a small conversation. Just grab your pen and paper, then write and enjoy the journey!

We uncover new things through learning a language, such as how people address their elders, how they express their gratitude or sadness over something, even how they choose the level of languages to talk with their friends, family, or even strangers.

In this BTS ARMY world, language appreciation isn’t only true for ARMYs who learn about the Korean language, but also BTS as they learn English to overcome the language barrier in order to communicate with ARMYs better. Despite their tight schedule, they always find a way to become a better version of themselves. Back then, it was only RM who would speak in English, and he would translate it into Korean for the rest of the members, but now everyone can understand and speak English with varying levels of confidence.

There is a phrase that was specially made by V for BTS ARMY to say I love you to each other, so instead of saying I love you, we can say Borahae (보라해); it is a combination of “purple” (보라색) and “I love you” (사랑해) in Korean. It is like a secret language for every ARMY to use, to show their connection to each other.

In this world, even though we do not speak the same language to each other, it does not mean we cannot show and share our love to each other. There are a lot of ways to learn a new language. Also learning a new language makes you learn a new culture as well, which is cool, isn’t it? Good luck learning a new language!
