Welcome to Magic Shop, everyone! Today, we shall experience and get to know about the true beauty of ARMYs’ special purple place.
“Magic Shop” is actually a track in BTS’ third Korean studio album, Love Yourself: Tear. This track was co-written and co-composed by Jung Kook. It describes Magic Shop as a place of refuge for the heartbroken, a place of healing for the disturbed, and a place of love for those who are lonely.
“Magic Shop” comforted many ARMYs who were in pain. BTS provided happiness and inner peace to ARMY through this special song. In the lyrics, they also provide us with an overview of the magical place that “Magic Shop” is.
For dejected people, RM says, “I do believe your galaxy, I want to listen to your melody,” stating that Magic Shop is a place where voices will be heard, and no one shall be left out.
For people tired of life, Jin and Jimin say, “On days you hate being yourself, on days you want to disappear forever, let’s make a door in your heart. Open the door and this place will await. It’s okay to believe that the Magic Shop will comfort you.” This says that the Magic Shop is a place for people in despair, for people who just want to give up. The Magic Shop will comfort them, heal their wounds, and listen to the stories of their sadness.
The vocal line sings, "So show me,” to which ARMY replies, “I’ll show you.” This probably states that BTS wants ARMY to show them a better version of themselves, to heal in peace, and come back again stronger. Or, it could be that BTS provides “training” for ARMY in the Magic Shop, which makes their abilities and strengths shine. It heals their weaknesses and makes them stronger. Thus, BTS tells ARMY to show them their magic and their wonders.
In the second verse, J-Hope and Suga rap soulfully, “Like a rose when blooming, like cherry blossoms when being scattered in the wind, like morning glory when fading, like that beautiful moment, I always wanted to be the best. So, I was impatient and always restless. Comparing myself with others became my daily life. My greed that was my weapon suffocated me and also became a leash.” Through these lines, they probably say that like temporary beauty, which is mesmerizing but doesn’t last forever, they run after temporary worldly satisfaction. They wanted to be the best, which made them greedy. This suffocated them and became a leash around their necks.
Later, the duo says, “But looking back on it now, truthfully, I feel like it’s not true that I wanted to be the best. I wanted to become your comfort and move your heart, I want to take away your sadness, and pain,” which says that they didn’t actually want to live in that temporary beauty. They rather wanted to guide others to true beauty, being content and happy that way.
In the bridge, V and Jimin sing, “Would you believe me if I said that I was scared of everything too? All the sincerity, the remaining times. All your answers are in this place you found, In your Milky Way, inside your heart.” This verse says that even BTS, at one time, was not happy and content. This probably refers to the early years after their debut when they were highly disrespected, which affected them in many ways, but they didn’t give up. This can also mean that the people facing what BTS faced in one form or the other can be safe in the Magic Shop, even if they are scared or broken.
The seven members then end the song with the following lines, “You gave me the best of me, so you'll give you the best of you. You found me. You knew me. You'll find it, the galaxy inside you.” This provides ARMY with hope and an affirmation to not lose hope in themselves and to never feel unsatisfied with themselves. BTS says that if we had the power to make them the best, we can surely turn ourselves into the best forms of ourselves as well.
Now, you might be thinking that making up a place that doesn’t even exist and giving false hope for something inexistent is not a healthy idea. We think otherwise. Everyone can visit the Magic Shop for free. In the bridge, Jimin says that we can all find our own Magic Shops in our hearts. That is where all the answers lie, deep down in your heart.
Moreover, “Magic Shop” was inspired by neurosurgeon’s James R. Doty’s book, Into The Magic Shop, in which the author notes down a series of important tricks and tips that, over time, teach him how to open up his heart and mind to manifesting his true potential. Due to BTS’ interest, his book became a bestseller in South Korea and received 510 times more sales than his other books in Korea.
BTS has shown us the significance of “Magic Shop.” “So show me, I’ll show you.” Let’s show BTS our best forms, ARMY!
