The 8th Member: Introducing BTS Pets

With hordes of ARMYs around the globe, numerous chart-topping hits under their name, and bags full of awards from various Korean and international music awards, BTS are undoubtedly one of the music industry’s biggest artists. But at the end of the day, these seven amazing, talented young men are no different than us when it comes to falling under the spell of adorable animals. Dogs, cats, sugar gliders — you name it! No matter how busy their schedule may be, BTS always finds a way to take care of their beloved pets.

All of the BTS members fawn over their pets on social media, and ARMYs also stay updated with their pets’ activities, dubbing their animal friends as the ever-changing “8th BTS member.” In this blog, let’s meet the pets of BTS, who rose to fame just the same as their owners.

RM’s pet dog, Rap Mon

First, let’s meet RapMon, the American Eskimo of no other than our leader, RM. You might think that RM named his dog after his former stage name, but it was his parents who gave the lovely dog his name back in 2013. Because of BTS’ busy schedule, RapMon currently lives with RM’s family, which makes it sometimes difficult for the dog to recognize him. In one V Live broadcast, RM mentioned how sad he was that RapMon only approaches him when he has dog treats. Still, RM finds the time to bond with RapMon whenever he has a chance, posting their adventures on social media.

Jin’s pet dog, Jjangu, and sugar gliders, Odeng, Eomuk, and Gukmul

Jin had a Maltese named Jjangu. He passed away last 2017 after reaching the average lifespan of a Maltese dog, which is twelve years. Aside from Jjanggu, Jin also had two sugar gliders named Odeng and Eomuk, which mean “fish” and “cake” in Korean. Odeng and Eomuk were gifts from Jin’s parents last 2017. Eomuk passed away last 2018, so Jin bought another sugar glider named Gukmul—which means “soup” in Korean—to accompany Odeng. A year later, Jin mentioned on V Live that Odeng passed away after falling down from the bridge in his cage.

During the 2019 FESTA, Jin released a soft-spoken ballad called “Tonight”, which was written and produced with his pets in mind. Needless to say, ARMYs were touched by Jin’s heartfelt gesture.

Suga’s pet dog, Holly

Now, let’s get to know more about Holly, Suga’s Toy Poodle! Based on the name, you might think that the dog is a female, but Holly is actually male. In one fansign event, Suga shared that the name “Holly” was given by his older brother. In the “ASK IN A BOX” interview, Suga revealed that he wasn’t a dog lover before Holly. His fellow BTS members even call him out for his fondness for Holly. In an episode of Suga’s radio show, DJ Suga’s Honey FM 06.13,” J-Hope mentioned how Suga calls Holly the smartest dog, even overdoing something as basic as walking.

J-Hope’s pet dog, Mickey

Here’s another dog that is as cute as his owner. Let’s learn more about Mickey, J-Hope’s Shih Tzu! J-Hope often plays with Mickey’s hair and ties it with a hair clip, also making him wear cute outfits such as baseball uniforms. During one of their performances of “Dope” for “Show! Music Core,” J-Hope demonstrated his love for Mickey and the other members’ pets by changing the lyrics of his rap part to include the names of their pets. Shih Tzus are known to be friendly, outgoing, and playful dogs, which matches J-Hope’s personality, making Mickey the perfect pet for him.

Jimin’s pet dog, Ddosun

Back when he was a young kid, Jimin had a pet dog named Ddosun. Ddosun was a mix of the Korean Jindo and Pitbull Terrier breeds, who Jimin raised since he was a puppy. After Ddosun’s death, Jimin hasn’t adopted another dog, making him the only BTS member without a pet. In one of his V Live videos, Jimin explained that although he was thinking of adopting a pet, he was allergic to cats, which surprised ARMY because he was often seen petting felines and playing with animals. He added that he also considered having a dog, but has doubts if he could take care of a pet because of BTS’ hectic schedule.

V’s pet dogs, Soonshim, Ssyongssyong, Sangdol, and Yeontan, and cat, Kkanji

Among all BTS members, V is the one raising the most number of pets, with four dogs and a cat living with his family. Soonshim and Ssyongssyong are his two snow-colored canines. Soonshim once appeared in one of V’s logs on their YouTube account, and he also posted one selca with Ssyongssyong last 2014. V would also occasionally post about Sangdol on Twitter. Yeontan, V’s Pomeranian, was first introduced to ARMYs during Jin’s birthday V Live broadcast last 2017. All of the BTS members were close to Yeontan, occasionally posting photos of them with the dog on Twitter as well. V’s cat, Kkanji, is a silver-grey feline that he used to post back in 2013.

Jung Kook’s pet dogs, Gureum and Bam

Jung Kook has two dogs named Gureum, a Maltese, and Bam, a Doberman. Gureum in the Korean language means “cloud.” During their “Let’s Share The Heart” interview on V Live, Jung Kook revealed that he adopted Gureum from an animal rescue center. And recently, Jung Kook introduced Bam to the public through “BTS In the SOOP Season 2.” ARMYs and viewers are praising Jung Kook for not cropping his Doberman’s ears and tail as is often customary for Doberman owners.

A lot of people make jokes about wanting to be the 8th BTS member, but for ARMYs, that position is already taken. It is reserved for their four-legged companions which, along with their caring owners, we have grown to dearly love!
