HYBE always finds a unique way to celebrate their artists' birthdays with their fans, for BTS they released a photo folio of each member on their birthday month. Members have the freedom to choose their own theme that suits them the most. The first one that got a chance to make it was Jungkook. He chose Me, Myself, and Jung Kook ‘Time Difference’ to be his theme and title, in which he turned into a vampire during the photoshoot. The maknae (youngest member) also decided himself what he wanted to wear during the photoshoot. He chose long boots, leather— but not too glossy, and an outfit he wore in the US for the Butter performance. He wanted the background of the pictures to be darker to represent the gradual darkening of a soul. He kept giving some suggestions for the photo shoot to make it even better. Well, it's not Jungkook if there's no perfection in it.
If Jung Kook chose the time difference as a theme. Namjoon chose Entirety as his own theme. First of all, BigHit dropped the teaser by posting the skit of Namjoon's session of photography. The title of his photo folio is Me, Myself, and RM 'Entirety'. He wanted to show a true and natural image through candid pictures. He chose the places that make him comfortable. Namjoon wore a gothic style and something comfortable for his photoshoot session. He also took some time to take a picture with his own camera because he wanted to share with ARMYs his perspective of what he sees. He tried to show both his calm and powerful sides through the pictures. Namjoon differentiates the photo folio into three sections: RM, Namjoon, and Rkive. Find the clip here.
This past week ARMYs celebrated the birthday of Jimin. Leading up to his birthday, Jimin’s photo folio was also revealed, albeit in small, bite-sized chunks. With ‘ID: Chaos’ as his title, choosing to focus on the rawness of his inner self prompted him to reflect intently on the emotions he wanted to capture in his photos as well as the aspects of himself that he wanted to present. From makeup to accessories, color palette to the way in which the fabric falls, every detail was considered and discussed.
During their birthday livestreams Jung Kook, Namjoon, and Jimin all took time to present their published photo folios to ARMYs. However, to avoid spoilers, they made sure not to reveal too much of the content. While they shared, they explained in more detail some of the contexts behind different images, what prompted their decision-making process as to which images to include, and just an overall preview of what ARMYs could hope to receive, should they be fortunate enough to secure one of these highly sought-after pieces of BTS memorabilia.
For artists like BTS who have spent so much of their career in front of cameras, it is clear to see from the teaser videos that Jimin still tried to bring new elements to his photoshoots, as did Namjoon and Jung Kook. Deciding on their concepts was only one aspect of their involvement in the creative process for this photo-folio project. The members also participated in the editing and design aspects, similar to their involvement in the “Artist-Made Collection by BTS.”
This second chapter of BTS’ career path is providing multiple opportunities for the members to further develop their knowledge and skills in all aspects of the entertainment industry, although fans know that BTS is happiest when they are performing on stage, surrounded by ARMYs. As 2022 progresses we eagerly await the photo-folio debuts of Taehyung and Jin, our two December birthdays and one can only imagine at this stage what their concepts might entail. One thing we know for sure though, whether it’s dark or light, raw or refined, traditional or contemporary— fans are in for a treat.
