BTS are known for their charismatic charm, eye-catching fashion, angelic vocal line, and straight-talking rap line. Giving comfort and joy to millions of fans worldwide, their music continues to enthrall audiences one track, one album, and one performance at a time. Yet, for all of their fame and fortune, they are still one of the humblest groups on the planet.
Global superstars, yet down-to-earth; millionaires, yet still unassumingly modest; artists at heart, but also professionals who understand the core realities of the industry they have chosen to work in. Certainly, BTS is all of these things, yet once you get to know them more intimately, you soon realize this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
There are so many other descriptors that could be called upon when referring to BTS. Funny, witty, and comical come to mind, so do sensitive, wise, and inspirational. Cute, sexy, and lovely are ARMY favorites, as are handsome, beautiful, and attractive (all very similar in nature, yet also distinctly different). While we’re on a roll, let’s not stop here. How about talented, intelligent, studious; or hardworking, understanding, and supportive? Seriously, we could go on for a millennium naming all the characteristics and attributes of BTS, both as individuals and as a group.
Today however, we’re here to acknowledge that ARMYs’ lives have not been the same since the announcement on 6 December 2021 that BTS would be taking an “official extended period of rest.” At the same time, fans learned that the BTS members would be investing time and energy on preparing for the March “Permission To Dance on Stage” concert at Seoul Olympic Stadium and releasing a new album. Both activities indicative of BTS’ next chapter in their career.
As if that wasn’t enough, later that same day, unprecedented news of the seven members launching instagram accounts erupted in the Twittersphere. Of course, ARMYs were determined to celebrate this momentous occasion and have remained as avid instagram supporters ever since. Seeing the BTS members with their own individual accounts has really given a new energy to the BTS & ARMY relationship.
In keeping with their personalities, the members have approached Instagram in their own unique way, each discovering the style that suits them best when communicating with their followers. Whether it’s posting their own photos or commenting on the other members’ posts, ARMYs are in the privileged position of seeing BTS’ Instagram growth and development, up close and personal. At times chaotic, at times cute, the BTS members never fail to put a smile on their fans' faces, warming even the coldest heart on the coldest winter’s day.
One of the first measures we saw the members take, to safeguard their Instagram accounts (and perhaps their sanity as well), was to disable comments. Although ARMYs may have hoped for a different result, overall they were happy to know that the members would not be bombarded with millions of comments. As one ARMY so eloquently phrased it on their Twitter account, “protecting their peace, drawing boundaries… we love it here.” Not surprisingly, Instagram has now become the private (yet very public) playground of the BTS members, and their conversations have given fans a new lease on life.
When Yoongi asked Namjoon what size joggers (pants) he should wear, Namjoon’s response of “전 XL 형은 L” prompted a multitude of threads on Twitter of Yoongi and Namjoon, standing side-by-side, with the caption “I’m XL, hyung is L.” However, it was Namjoon’s next comment to his hyung that set off ARMYs’ cute-o-meters, when he politely reminded Yoongi that he could ask those things in their KakaoTalk group chat, a space reserved exclusively for the members.
Since launching their Instagram accounts, we’ve seen the members ask each other how to deactivate something on Instagram because they no longer want to see it, and we’ve also seen them retreat to the comfort and safety of Weverse when they need to recharge. We’ve seen their stories appear and then after a while suddenly disappear, because the members deleted them. Regardless, each shared moment has been an opportunity for ARMYs to feel closer to BTS and catch a glimpse of how BTS are living out their vacations.
This is the first time the BTS members have had their own individual social media accounts, so in that respect, it really does feel like they have stepped into the next chapter of their lives. However, whether it’s Weverse or Instagram, YouTube or VLive, 2013 or 2022, the septet are the same wherever they go, and there’s a very fine line between chaotic and cute. In the end though, it’s all relative! BTS are BTS and ARMYs are here for them.
