TV shows are just one of many ways for fans to see their favorite idols. Yet, TV shows are one of the main venues through which idols can get recognition and promotions. Rookies, especially, can use TV shows to get the attention of people in order to gain more fans and earn a spot in people’s hearts.
There are a lot of TV shows in South Korea that typically invite idols to be their guest stars, such as “Knowing Bros,” “Weekly Idol,” “Running Man,” and many more. There are also shows like “Music Bank” and “Inkigayo” that are usually a place for singers to promote new songs. Artists also compete with each other to try and win the daily trophy from the show.
BTS faced struggles with their early TV show appearances, which later prompted them to make adjustments to how and when they appeared on South Korean television. Back in the old days when BTS were rookies, they were invited to some shows — either as a whole group or in subunits with only some members attending the show. However, even with these hiccups, they have developed a signature TV-style over the course of their careers, helping to showcase the seven wonderful, chaotic men we know today.
Their very first variety show was “Rookie King”; in this show, the members took on many roles, such as athletes, models, and announcers.
Later, they were invited to the “After School Club.” This show enables fans to interact with their idols through applying for Google Hangouts video chat sessions, sending tweets to “ASC,” and sharing status and comments on their Facebook accounts.
There are also 8 episodes of the iconic show “American Hustle Life,” where we can see how BTS spent two weeks in L.A. to get a better sense of hip hop with great tutors, such as Coolio and Warren G.
They also participated in Idol Star Athletics Championship from 2014 till 2017. ISAC is an annual event where all idols are separated into groups and compete in various branches of sports.
After some time, BTS decided to create their own variety show in 2015. “Run BTS!” is a free show that ARMYs can enjoy on VLive and Weverse. Good thing is, it comes with subtitles to help international ARMYs understand the show.
The concept of the show is that the boys have to accept and complete some missions through games and challenges in order to win a prize that the production team has prepared. And since it is a game, when there is a winner, there is also a loser — the members who lose will typically get punished.
ARMYs usually enjoy seeing the punishments doled out since they are often hilarious. Sometimes the production team makes the members wear specific pieces of clothing in public, such as when Jin lost and was forced to wear a hanbok when they were about to travel to Hong Kong to perform at the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Jin had to wear it after losing two rounds of “Run BTS!” games: a jumping photo shoot challenge and a spot-the-difference puzzle.
On June 10, 2019, BTS strolled through Incheon Airport, as Suga, Jin, and J-Hope walked proudly while wearing sunflower headpieces. Fans instantly understood why the members wore those flashy accessories on their heads — yes, it was because they had lost a game in “Run BTS!”
Due to their tight schedule, BTS rarely appear on TV shows, and when they do come they almost always come as a group. Recently, BTS made an appearance in “You Quiz on The Block.” The members played several games and did little interviews with the hosts, Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Se-ho.
Kim Jung-Hyun, a lucky ARMY who is known because of her “MIC Drop” dance on Youtube, was also invited to the show. BTS hyped her up when she danced “MIC Drop” and “Dynamite,” as they danced along with her. Jung-Hyun was so happy when the members acknowledged her, with Jin saying they got information that she was a student president, and when V mentioned her dream to become a businesswoman with a bag in one hand and phone in the other.
The boys and Jung-Hyun played a game where Jung-Hyun had to act out their lyrics, and BTS had to guess what the title of the song was. The members won the first round and got a drumstick cushion as a prize.

The next round, BTS played a relay karaoke quiz, where each of the members had to guess the title of the song and sing different parts — for example, Jung Kook was randomly chosen by the hosts to sing V’s part in “IDOL.” They won this round and received one million won as a prize.
After playing a game, BTS did interviews in groups. Firstly, RM and V, the 3Js (J-Hope, Jimin, and Jung Kook), and last but not least, Jin and Suga. They were each given the same questions by the hosts to answer. Then, BTS played dance mafia, where the members were given a pair of headphones with the same song, though one member had a different song; Suga and the hosts had to guess which one was the mafia. Suga succeeded in guessing the mafia and also received a million won.
The interview questions were about how they see their past and their thoughts about their music. Suga revealed how the boys were able to have bonded so well, saying “A lot of people ask us how we get along so well. I tell people that it’s because we fought a lot. We really fought so much. But we always resolved them within 24 hours. That was the rule we set for ourselves.”
Through these moments, ARMYs can see how much the boys love their music, and how they cherish every moment of their careers from the start until now. ARMYs will always be a part of BTS's life and vice versa. They will always make sure that we have them in our lives, whether through their music, their TV appearances, or the many other activities they do for us.
