“시작은 초라했지 대구 그래 남산동 지하….” written in a song lyric of the son of Daegu, Suga – Moonlight. If one looked into the translation of this song, it would look something like this: “The beginning was shabby, Daegu, from a basement in Namsandong.” Within this lyric, he was talking about the birth of his music career, where he started working in a small studio in his place at Daegu. Suga was born in Taejeon-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu; but before we explore Daegu, are you familiar with what kind of city it is? No? Well, we will try to give you a feel of the atmosphere in Daegu during this time.
Daegu (sometimes people spell it Taegu), meaning “Big Hill,” is the fourth-largest city after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon in South Korea. It is also the third-largest metropolitan city in the nation with over 2.5 million residents. What a big place to explore! So, hop on, and let’s go!
The first destination, Gwaneum middle school! This is the middle school that Suga attended and graduated from. It is located on 87 Gwaneumdong-ro, Gwaneum-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. If you want to know more about Suga childhood’s school, his principal once said that Suga finished all his middle school years in Gwaneum middle school, and revealed that many foreigners who came and visited the school took pictures afterward. Moreover, Suga got a lot of praise from his music teacher whom he asked to teach him to play the piano. So this is the place where he got his golden hands from, to create his countless masterpieces!
Now, let’s move to another destination, Kangbuk High School! It is located at 100 Taejeon-ro, Taejeon il-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. This school was the place where Suga got his name – you all know what it means, right? If you call yourself ARMY, you should know the answer. Yes – it is a shortened version of the basketball position Yoongi favored: Shooting Guard. Yoongi made a record by winning the basketball championships for his team.
At one point, Yoongi’s teacher, Kwon Jae Hwan, was interviewed by a television channel. He said that Suga was a basketball maniac and a good role model as a student due to never breaking the school rules or making trouble. Moreover, you can find an inscription in front of the school gate which is written “A person with a dream, a person with motivation, a person with morals.” Such inspiring and meaningful words! After becoming a trainee, Yoongi moved to the same school as RM, Apgujeong High School
That’s enough playing around schoolyards for now! Let’s take a bus to go to another area – but it is not just a common bus. Do you know what it is? Bus 724! There is a story behind this particular bus. Suga took the 724 to attend his music academy, BAS Academy. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes by 724. Suga also made a song entitled 724148 which was taken from the bus number, 724 and 148. The 148 bus being the one that carried Suga to Seoul to become a trainee.
Once you get off at Kwak Hospital bus stop, you will see an orange building on the other side and you can also meet Yoongi in person– just kidding! But you can see an enormous picture of him on the side of the building. Like we said before, this is the BAS academy where Suga started his career. Inside of this building, there are many of Suga’s pictures on the wall – but you can’t rip them off or take them away! Another fact that you must know about Suga and this place. He got his runner-up title at the Big Hit audition and became a BTS member while studying at this academy!
Wait for a moment, because we have more happy news for you from Suga for his hometown. He made a big donation due to the devastation of COVID-19! He donated 100 million KRW to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association in order to help Daegu City fight back against the virus on February 27th, 2020. And it’s no surprise, as he has a long record of working with many charities alongside his group members to lend a hand.
Feeling excited now? Well, hold on to your hats! There is still more to see in Daegu. Do you know whose place will be our next destination? Woohoo, that’s true! V’s hometown, Geochang! Don’t forget to take a rest, grab a snack, and get ready to go to our winter bear’s scenery next month.
