BTS Eras: Who is the MVP?

What comes to mind when talking about an “era” in K-Pop groups ― or in “BTS” in general? For the most part, an “era” refers to a set, themed period during a K-pop group’s career, typically fashioned after the style of a leading single or album. However, if we are talking about BTS, then we can add a deeper nuance. Starting from their debut in 2013, with their debut single “No More Dream” on their first album until BE, which was released just last year, there has been an era in which a certain member of BTS stood out the most for ARMY.

Many people mention their favorite member every year after debuting their song and talking about their new style and look. Of course, there is no objective truth to this, and your own experience and opinion may differ, but in our minds, these are the MVPs of each era!

  • School Trilogy (2013-2014)

It’s a common trope to have boy bands wear uniforms for their MVs to represent a schoolboy story or aesthetic. For this part, we would do well to remember the song “Boy in Luv,” in which BTS acted like the bad boys of a school with their own unique school uniform style. The MVP of this Era is RM! With his silver hair and look, he really nailed this style!

  • Youth Trilogy (2015-2016)

After graduating from school, we must continue our own life to start the new journey of being a young adult. In this era, BTS showed their growth through another story about their youth through “RUN.” We probably don’t have to mention which member shone in this era. After all, within the fanbase, this look is legendary. Yes ― it is SUGA!!!. He rocked mint green hair and went beyond all expectations in acting his character’s chaotic role. He’s long since stated that he won’t be returning to this color, but I think we can all agree that no matter how he looks, he’s still charming. Am I right?

  • Wings (2016-2017)

If we are talking about their album Wings, one word pops into mind ― Refinement. This era is where BTS closes out their story of youth and continues experiencing their uncertainty in adulthood. They used many dark themes relating to morality for their songs, including “Blood, Sweat, and Tears.” Unquestionably, Jimin was the MVP of this era; all eyes were on him after watching the MV. His looks and charisma strongly represented both the song and his own character.

  • Love Yourself (2017-2018)

This era truly made room for all of the members of BTS to shine with their own songs and stories through which ARMY can learn more about them. But, there is one song that made an enormous impact for ARMY: “Fake Love.” And, yes ― JUNGKOOK IS IN THE HOUSE!! And he constantly shines in the performance of this song, irrespective of the wooing fan service he surprised the audience of America’s BBMA stage with. We bet ARMY was also shocked after watching the truly inspiring MVA’s honorable mention J-Hope who starred in “Airplane, pt 2 - Japanese version” in which he wore his indigenous-inspired not-quite-a-poncho number that made him gorgeous!

  • Map of The Soul (2019-2020)

We are in pinktan era! Why call it that? Because they used pink for their album cover, outfits, and music video set for the one and only “Boy with Luv”! Each of the members were as bright and charming as they have ever been in this MV. But there was one person who made everyone do a double-take ― TAEHYUNG!!! He had sweet blue hair and stunning vibes that made sure audiences and cameras alike couldn’t look away. It was so much fun seeing his expressions while singing. Don’t you feel the same way?

  • BE (2020-2021)

And, here we are! We step into the most recent era where we have BE. The leading single of this album is “Life goes on,” in which the members showed their concern about the situation that we all find ourselves in and they put their words into heart-melting lyrics to cheer ARMY up and fight back during COVID-19. For this part, we do believe that Jin is the MVP for this MV because we can see his character as an older brother for other members and it truly shows how much he cares for them like they’re real brothers. This situation makes us feel like we are trapped in our homes, but we must survive no matter what for people who matter most to us.

Each era has its own MVP, and maybe the members who shone the most for us weren’t the same for you, because each member of BTS always put their best feet forward in every project they are in, making each of them shine just as brightly as each other. They always do their best together to overcome all problems and achieve their dreams together. And we all know that all 7 members are ARMY’s MVP for yesterday, now, and forever!
