BTS’ 6th Year at the BBMAs

Summer 2022 is shaping up to be a very exciting season for ARMY and BTS. With the release of their new anthology album Proof set for June 10th and Festa following only three days after on the 13th, we can see how busy the artists are. Reports dropped by K-media outlets on May 9th stated that the group would not be attending, nor performing, at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. Instead, they will be taking the time to focus on their comeback and Festa preparations, with videos ready for presentation for any awards they receive. This will be their first time since 2017 not attending the show, as the two previous years, they held performances from South Korea due to the pandemic. Also, this year they do not have a performance scheduled and Billboard does not report them as one of their performers.

The group received their first nomination from the award show in 2017, winning the award for Top Social Artist. This marked their first-ever American award show win. Their first performance at the BBMAs was in 2018 when they performed “Fake Love”. That same year they won their second BBMA, once again for Top Social Artist. 2019 marked the first year they were nominated outside of this category, in addition to Top Social Artist, taking home an award for Top Duo/Group; they have been consistently nominated for this award every year since. That year they performed on stage with Halsey in “Boy with Luv”. In 2020, the awards show was postponed until October, giving us an enthralling performance of Dynamite in Incheon Airport. Breaking into even more categories, BTS got their first nominations for Top Selling Song and Top Song Sales Artist in 2021 in conjunction with nominations once again in the two aforementioned categories. In a sweeping feat, they took home every award they were nominated for that year. For the 2021 show, they prepared a suave and grand performance of “Butter”. This year's show is set to air on May 15th.

BTS were nominated for seven awards this year in various categories including, Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, and Top Billboard Global (Excluding U.S.) Artist. In addition, “Butter” was nominated for Top Billboard Global (Excluding U.S.) Song, and Top Selling Song. The group is nominated against themselves in the Top Selling Song category, as “Permission to Dance” is nominated alongside “Butter.” The group was also nominated with Coldplay in the Top Rock Song category for the “My Universe” collaboration track.

If BTS wins in their nominated Top Duo/Group category, they will be tied with former group One Direction for the most wins in this category— a total of three. If they win Top Selling Song for either of their tracks “Butter” or “Permission to Dance,” they will hold the record for most wins in the category, a total of two, and will be the only artist to have won multiple times. As of now, they are tied with Cardi B for the most nominations in this category, both nominated thrice. They currently hold the BBMA record for most nominations for a Duo/Group at the awards.

The award show has seemingly done away with the Top Social Artist Category, one that BTS has won for the past five consecutive years. They were the first K-Pop group to be nominated for and win the award. It was first awarded in 2011 and now looks to be a retired category. Five new categories were added to this year's awards, including two in which the group is nominated: Top Billboard Global (Excl. U.S.) Artist and Top Billboard Global (Excl. U.S.) Song.

No matter the outcome of the awards, ARMY was undoubtedly proud of BTS. Fans and the group are now looking forward to the new album and the celebration of Festa, with their focus being comeback goals and celebrating the great legacy of Bangtan Sonyeondan.
